Mission: Revitalization of the South Phoenix Village community became a critical issue to the residents who live and work in this section of the valley. In 1989, their issues were presented to the City Council for the City of Phoenix and was granted funding to establish the first Fightback Organization. Their first task was to reduce crime and drug activity in their neighborhood. This success project resulted in the reduction of crime by 27% and overwhelming private and public support. Their diligent pursuit of a means to redevelop and rebuild their neighborhood received local and state recognition. At this point, it was important to the residents to have both a redevelopment plan and community based organization whose function would be to ensure that the plan produced positive results. Hence the Community Excellence Project, Inc., a nonprofit community development corporation was incorporated in 1990 to achieve their goal.
