I have been a Adult 2 Youth Mentor for the past 3 1/2 years. It has been an enlightening experience in that as I have "put myself out there for our teens" the return for me has been life changing. I became a Child Advocates volunteer due to my own personal experience as a mother with a former teen involved in the Juvenile Justice system. The opportunity to give back has been my pleasure. As I tell my "mentee" youth "I have buckled my seat belt and I am in this with you for the journey ahead." Kudos to the small army of wonderful staff at Child Advocates of Placer County for your dedication to the youth of Placer County. I heartfully bless this wonderful non-profit for the work that they do to enrich the lives of our foster youth, families in need, youth at risk, youth in probation, youth aging out of the foster care system, deserving children and youth up to age 22.

Programs: Our mission is to be the bridge between the most vulnerable in our community and volunteers who make a difference. We serve our community through two volunteer-driven programs: 1) placer casa, which trains community volunteers to be court appointed special advocates (casas) and assigns these casas to children in foster care. Casa volunteers are often called "the eyes and ears of the judge and the voice of the child" in juvenile dependency proceedings; and 2) placer mentors, which trains community volunteers to become mentors for at-risk youth (ages 8 to 18). The goal of mentoring to build positive connections with the youth, which in turn will lead to other successes in their life. Some of our mentors also work with parents involved with child protective services, helping them develop the life skills necessary to successfully and permanently reunify with their children. These volunteers are known as "family mentors. " in 2016-17 our 303 casa volunteers and mentors served 408 foster children (95% of all placer county foster children), 53 at-risk youth and former foster youth, and 59 families (through the family mentor program).
