Mission: To enrich student life and challenge students to grow into responsible citizens of the world.
Programs: Student programs - the student executive committee (excomm), y-outdoors and social activism speaker series committees, and community service project leaders - including 40 to 50 student leaders - plan and implement approximately 100 programs each year including: the y-hike backpacking trip, day hikes, national park camping trips, world fest week and the international food fair, dr. Martin luther king jr. Commemoration week events, decompression, union station homeless shelter - monthly meal service, alternative spring break trips, make-a-difference day, an india cultural trip, washington dc science policy trip, a speaker series that featured well-renowned speakers (larry wilson, daniel flaming, abel ramirez, pablo alvarado, jonathan katz, france cordova, jennifer mustos, michael nacht, david wright, rush holt, robert hanrahan, ron lin, robb willer, and carl pabo); and explore la, life skills, and adventure 101 series. 4,000 individuals participated or were served by the caltech ys programs. The y also awarded the lucy guernsey award to two students for their outstanding service to the community, the studenski award to one undergraduate at a cross road, hummel gray awards to seven students for conference travel, and the advocating change together award for service and education to two caltech students.
friends dinners and activities - dinners, held three times a year, provide an opportunity for caltech alumni, students and friends to get acquainted while also being educated by guest speakers. Guests speakers range from caltech professors to prominent community members. Occasional activities involve educational field trips for alumni and friends of the y. A total of 370 people participated in the 3 friends dinners.
