Ms. Henningsen is nothing short of a hoarder. We went there to adopt and words cannot express what we saw. Animal feces were everywhere. The place stunk and was filthy. I cried at the conditions these animals were living in. How can anyone go on like this and why hasn't someone shut this hoarder down?
If I could give zero stars I would. President of this place is abusive, a hoarder, and severely mentally ill. Someone needs to call the cops on her and forbid her from ever keeping any kind of animal. Place should be investigated and permanently shut down for good! Horrible sicko!
Review from Guidestar
Bright Eyes Alive has provided me with detailed, expert and prompt advice over the past 8 years to help me care for and bond my rabbits. Patricia Henningsen has an amazing wealth of experience with rabbits of all ages, personalities and problems, and she has been generous in sharing her knowledge with me. She genuinely cares about her rabbits. Because I trust her, I have contacted her before taking my bunnies to their vet appointments, relaying their symptoms to Patricia, and asking her to give me a heads up on what I might be facing at the vet appointment. Patti has asked questions to get more information and then given accurate diagnoses, and predicted scenarios of the recommended lab work and medications that might be requested at the vets. She is on target with her information. In certain instances, Patti has saved me hundreds of dollars by steering me away from extensive blood work that she knows is unnecessary. She has also been more accurate in diagnosing my bun's ailments than our vet. She has been to my home to help with a bonding, and I have been to hers. I cannot recommend her and her non profit highly enough. Her buns, and her donors, are lucky to have such a caring and knowledgeable organization. I will continue to support Bright Eyes Alive.
I contacted BES in 2009 to adopt a bonded pair of rabbits. I live in Washington D.C. and Ms. Henningsen drove all the way down to my home to deliver the rabbits personally and make sure they got settled. Before that we had been in contact for months while I built the proper housing enclosure. During the pre-adoption time Ms. Henningsen was very communicative, keeping me updated about the excellent health of the rabbits, and I even got to meet them pre-adoption at a vet visit.
I have NEVER regretted adopting from Bright Eyes Sanctuary. Since 2009 my rabbits have been healthy and happy, thanks in part to the excellent care BES gave them during fostering. My two bunnies (Tabitha and Twitchett) are now 10-11 years old and I love them more than words can express. After adoption, I was able to volunteer my home to host "bunny matches" so that other single rabbits might find a friend for life and enjoy the care and companionship that I see in my own rabbits.
At each of these bunny matches, I saw multiple rabbits that were coming directly from the BES headquarters. All of them were in terrific condition, healthy, looked good and very very sociable. I personally would help set up, run, and clean up these events. After having done this several times I can say with some experience that Ms. Henningsen truly knows what she is doing and takes excellent care of the animals she is responsible for. I would recommend adoption from Bright Eyes Sanctuary to anyone I know without hesitation.
Review from Guidestar
BES is a wonderful organization and so are its owners. I am an adopter of a wonderful rabbit that came from BES. He was extremely well taken care of when we adopted him. Ms. Henningsen is very rigorous with her adopter process and made sure that we knew exactly what we needed to do to take the very best care of our new rabbit. She has been extremely nice and helpful and is still extremely helpful and present in our family's lives to ensure the very best for rabbit. I have absolutely no doubt that all of her animals are very well taken care of and know first hand some of the stories behind some of the pets that she currently owns. I would absolutely do business with BES again and would recommend friends and family to do business with this organization.
I've been involved with BES since 2007. Our first bun was deemed "aggressive" but rescued from a "quick kill shelter" by Ms. Henningsen. The bun was anything but aggressive! He was the sweetest creature I had ever met and we are grateful every day that he was saved by such a loving person. Since then, we have adopted 3 more buns, with two of them passing in that time. Each time we lost a bun, I called on Bright Eyes for emotional support to help us deal with the loss and Ms. Henningsen was always there for us, and the lonely bun left behind. She also took the time to carefully bond each bunny with an appropriate mate, ensuring everyone's happiness. The buns we have adopted couldn't be happier. I have also had the pleasure of visiting Bright Eyes. I am highly allergic to hay (and yes, we still keep buns and a huge pile of hay around!) and I have never had any type of allergic reaction in the facility, which is a testament to how clean the environment is for the bunnies sheltered there. Having witnessed the operations first hand, I can only wish and pray that all other nonprofits function in a similar manner. Ms. Henningsen should be praised for her dedication to detail, ensuring each animal is given the best of care and that each adopter is given ample education to ensure the adoption is successful and the buns are treated with the same respect they receive under her care.
I am a volunteer as well as a two-time adopter. I first came to Patti looking for a friend for my beloved Fred. All the bunnies that came to the bunny date were well cared for and well socialized. Fred immediately fell in love with two sister. Patti then took them in to bond. Throughout the bonding process she was in constant contact and then dropped the buns off to me personally after the week was up. She is always available for questions or help.
After several years I then adopted the rest of the family that I took in with Fred. Even after 3 or so years passed, the bunnies were in fantastic condition and well socialized with humans and other bunnies.
If you are looking for a well cared for rabbit from a shelter that offers help through the adoption process and after, Bright Eyes is the place for you.
I had the pleasure of visiting Bright Eyes Sanctuary while in the process of adopting from them. The Sanctuary is spacious, loving, and environmentally conscientious. The two rabbits that I adopted came to me healthy, happy, litter-box trained, and well-socialized.
Bright Eyes Sanctuary was quite clear about what they were looking for in an adopter, but they remained in faithful communication with me for months as I made the necessary preparations before finalizing the adoption. It's been five years since I first adopted from BES, but they have responded to every last little question or concern that I've had. They don't turn their backs on their adopters.
If you're looking to support house rabbits, by adopting or some other means, please give your support to Bright Eyes Sanctuary. They do amazing work.
If all rescues could have a President that is as compassionate, caring, and dedicated as the President and facilitator of Bright Eyes, we would be a better society. Ms. Henningson is all of these things and more. She doesn't just send you out the door with one of her animals and you never hear from her again. She is as interested when you leave as when your visit. She is a great resource for those of us who have adopted and wish to stay in touch after the adoption process. She can tell you just about anything you could want to know about each animal regarding their personaliities and as well as their basic physical facts. She will give you her honest ane experienced opinion on the care of your newly adopted bunnies and will let you know if she feels your bunny is in trouble physically and how to remedy it. She has dedicated her life to animals, some that no one wants to take on due to the cruelties and neglect from people. She is the most devoted person and a champion to animals and our planet.
I have never written a review about anything before but I thought it necessary to review Bright Eyes. I have adopted several bunies from Bright Eyes with bonding performed by the organizations director. All the bunnies I have adopted have been in fantastic condition, healthy and a good weight. They have also been well socialized with other bunnies. Their enclosures at the sanctuary are spacious and cleaned regularly with and unending supply of water and hay. The bonding experiences were both excellent. The director herself performed them and knew exactly what signs to look for to know if the match would be good. She also gave me regular updates during the bonding with pictures to let me know how it was progressing. After bonding she delivered them personally back to me to make sure their enclosure at the house was sufficient and to make sure they were settled in. All in all, my experiences with Bright Eyes were excellent and I would recommend the organization to anyone that was serious about adopting a bunny.
I am the president of this organization and the two reviews below are entirely fictitious and unsubstantiated. The information in them belies not only a complete ignorance of how our organization functions but also also an agenda of character assassination without even the slightest actual personal knowledge of anything regarding the animal care in question. All of our animals receive the highest quality veterinary care whenever required and regular wellness exams. They also are given premium quality diet and enrichment. They are also kept in a very healthy environment. However, that being said, this form of cyber terrorism as demonstrated below is not something which Guidestar should enable if it wishes to maintain it's own integrity. People's lives and professional reputations are nothing to toy with in this hateful manner. It is also very interesting that the reviewers took several years to post their alleged claims. Bright Eyes Sanctuary is now exploring legal remedy for this harassment. False accusers, be aware that your actions are not without repercussion. Myself and other volunteers have given much time and funds to this worthy organization and will continue to do so because we are 100% committed to the lives of our sanctuary animals.
