Mission: The brain injury alliance of washington is determined that no one who has survived a brain injury or been affected by another person's injury should have to face their condition alone. Our vision is a world where brain injury is prevented, and every person already affected by its impact benefits from resources that maximize his/her quality of life. Our mission is to increase public awareness, support, and hope for those affected by brain injury through education, assistance, and advocacy.
Programs: Resource center: the organization manages the state toll-free helpline, assisting over 8,000 callers each year and referring those who need additional support to in-person resource management. Staff supports clients in achieving client centered goals, which include support in navigating social security, medical systems, family issues, housing, employment and any other issue related to their brain injury.
support services: the organization facilitates 20 support groups throughout the state of washington designed to connect survivors and caregivers with others who face similar issues. We provide social outings, education scholarships & free trainings to providers & practitioners.
brain health and wellness: the organization's brain health & wellness program tailors health and wellness classes specifically for individuals affected by brain injury and their loved ones. The brain health & wellness program focuses on classes that support survivor and family member integration. The program offers nonclinical classes such as social skills, organizational skills, relationships and communicating designed to empower the participants and give them the tools to take ownership of their health and well-being.
peer mentoring: the organization's brain injury peer navigation program matches a person who has been living with brain injury for at least 2 years and has received some training in how to assist others in their own journey with brain injury, with someone who is either recently injured or has been recently struggling. Navigators are provided with a one-day training that will explore their limits as navigators with special guidance on when and how to make referrals to biawa and others, when appropriate. Peer navigators are part of a larger team of the biawa brain injury peer navigator program. The team includes other peer partners, peer navigators, and the biawa staff. This larger group provides support, encouragement, and a safety net to assist all members.
