Causes: Boys Clubs, Children & Youth
Mission: To empower boys and young men by providing effective programs and a supportive community. The boys' club of ny's vision is to become a recognized leader in youth development programming for boys and young men and to ensure that all boys develop the critical skills and values that prepare them for a healthy and successful adulthood.
Programs: Clubhouse activities - since 1876, the boys' club of ny has positively influenced the lives of nearly a million young men. Building on this 141 year track-record of demonstrable impact, the boys' club of ny offers engaging, evidence-based, youth development programs after school, on saturdays and in the summer. In 2017 the boys' club of ny supported 1531 boys and young men to become capable, confident, character-rich and connected through a full array of character development and life skills, academic support and enrichment, visual and performing art, music, physical and mental health, and, sports and recreation programs. At the boys' club of ny, members can receive assistance getting into college or getting a job; learn how to play up to 8 instruments, dance, act, take and develop photos, paint and sculpt; learn how to swim, exercise, practice yoga, receive individual therapy; play a variety of competitive sports, play games, make friends, and develop positive adult relationships.
educational services- to build academic skills and a love of learning, and help members plan for the future, the boys' club of ny offers high school access, read (early literacy), project-based stem programs (including robotics, engineering, natural science, and anatomy), tutoring, homework help, recreational academic clubs and competitions (spelling, pen pals, science, math), and college access. In 2017, 651 members received homework help, 164 members received tutoring, 34 members received help learning how to read, 539 participated in stem, and 42 were placed into independent school.
camping - over the summer, 6th, 7th and 8th grade members spend a residential leadership and wilderness week camping. Through partnerships with the princeton blairstown center and the appalachian mountain club, as well as the camp the boys' club of ny leases in harriman state park, all middle-school-aged students attend one week in the outdoors every summer. Members camping experiences have leadership components, including workshops and discussion circles around becoming a man, team project-based learning activities like raft building and exploring the natural wilderness environment through stem activities. All of the boys will have opportunities to challenge and explore ideas of manhood, leadership, and camaraderie.
