Mission: B'nai b'rith covenant house provides affordable independent housing for seniors. We develop programs and projects to enrich the residents' lives while fostering independence and dignity.
Programs: This organization provided housing and supportive services to elderly and handicapped persons through the operation of a 79-unit multifamily housing complex in tucson, arizona. The organization served 79 residents: 67% between the ages 62-80 and 33% between 81-95. Of this population, approximately 48% were classified as at-risk elderly and 33% were frail-elderly. In addition to providing decent, safe and sanitary affordable housing for low-income seniors, this project also provided the services of a full-time, on-site service coordinator. This coordinator is a valuable resource person who assisted residents with such services as: assessments, benefits/entitlements/insurance, crisis intervention/supportive counseling, health care services, isolation intervention, family support and (continued on schedule o) transportation. The coordinator also worked with local food program agencies to provide monthly food boxes (food plus, tefap) for approximately 51 residents, including providing an emergency food/toiletries/incontinent supply pantry on-site. Approximately ten residents utilize the senior companion program each month. Educational in-services scheduled by the service coordinator included: flu shot clinic, personal safety and self defense, healthy hydration, medicare presentation, healthy habits for adults, pcoa medicare savings plan, pcoa "be med smart", and aging policies from senator flake's office. Other social programs included: volunteer appreciation, grocery shopping trips, craft classes, birthday and holiday celebrations, a memorial service, an ice cream social, and a variety of entertainment and concerts. The coordinator also works with home instead health care every year with the be a santa to a senior program. More than 80% of the residents benefited from using the service coordinator for these and referrals to other supportive services. The organization also provided a professionally-staffed wellness center and computer learning center. Wellness center programs included: aerobic exercise and stretch equipment, yoga, strength, balance and flexibility class, chair exercises, walking club, and health and nutrition classes.
