Mission: Bike works builds sustainable communities by educating youth and promoting bicycling. For nearly two decades we've worked to educate and empower youth, and make bicycling accessible and affordable to the seattle community.
Programs: Youth programs - education and empowerment:bike works youth programs serve a diverse group of young people in programs and partnerships from throughout the seattle metro area with a concentration on southeast seattle. In 2017, 1,775 youth learned bike mechanics and safe riding skills. Youth rode over 4,500 combined miles in our summer riding camps and school year programs. Youth completed over 7,200 hours of community service.
community bike shop - increasing access by making bicycles, parts, education and repair service affordable:bike works community bike shop helps to get used bikes at affordable prices out to the community through a welcoming atmosphere. It is an earned-income stream for bike works and helps to support our many programs and services. In 2017, the bike shop sold nearly 2,000 refurbished bicycles to the community and served customers in over 9,000 transactions and helped make bicycling affordable and accessible to the community.
bicycle recycling and reuse program - environmental stewardship:bike works recycle and reuse program helps to procure, assess, and distribute the many bike donations we receive each year and helps us to get used unwanted bikes into the hands of people who need them and gets them back out on the road. In 2017, 6,059 bikes were donated and 212,000 lbs. Of bicycles were removed from the waste stream. Many bikes were refurbished for use in the bike shop, bike works programs, and also many bikes were donated to local and international organizations.
