Mission: Balletx produces original choreography that expands the vocabulary of classical dance for all audiences.
Programs: Home season: balletx performed an expanded season of four performance series: three as resident dance company of the wilma theater, and one at the prince theater, as the wilma underwent major renovations. Balletx presented 37 performances over the course of the season, reaching record audiences totaling 11,692. The company presented world premieres by jo stromgren, jodie gates, matthew neenan, r. Colby damon, and tommie-waheed evans (choreographic fellow), alongside the u. S. Premiere of cayetano soto's "schachmatt and the return of matthew neenan's "sunset, o639 hours" (2014); "credo" (2016); and "the last glass" (2010).
touring: recognized worldwide for its unique repertory, balletx toured to such prestigious venues as vail dance festival (co); the joyce theater (ny); laguna dance festival (ca); gretna music (pa); grounds for sculpture (nj); portland ovations (me); boston institute of contemporary art, through world music/crasharts (ma); new york city center (ny); halcyon stage (dc); the princeton festival (nj); and summerstage (ny). These engagements reached over 21,000 patrons across the nation.
dance exchange: balletx's in-school outreach program, dance exchange, based on the award-winning methodology of the national dance institute in nyc, uses live music and structured creative learning to teach philadelphia students the basic vocabulary of dance, while fostering personal growth skills like self-confidence, focus, teamwork, and collaboration. In the 2016-2017 school year, the program reached nearly 200 3rd and 4th grade students at three public schools: albert m. Greenfield, bache-martin, and chester a. Arthur. Dance exchange brought two teaching artists and a live musician into the classroom twice every week for 12 weeks. The program featured mid-way performances for students' peers and final performances at the prince theater for audiences totaling 455. Summer intensive: in june 2017, balletx hosted its sixth annual summer intensive training program for pre-professional dancers. The two-week program, held at the performance garage, facilitated growth in a new generation of dancers by engaging them in day-long workshops in advanced ballet, contemporary, jazz, repertory, yoga, pilates, and fitness training. Focusing on balletx repertory taught by artistic staff and former company members, the program reached 25 students and culminated in a final performance for family and community members.
