Mission: To provide and encourage an engaged, thoughtful feminist response to mainstream and popular culture.
Programs: The organization effects positive change in portrayals of women and feminism in the media. This is achieved through education and encouragement of critical thinking about messages put forth by commercial culture (movies, tv, magazines, advertising, etc. The vehicle for this education is a publication entitled "bitch: feminist response to pop culture", a website, "www. Bitchmagazine. Org", bitch media's popaganda and backtalk podcasts, the bitch on campus program that provides curriculum and speakers for colleges across north america, and finally the bitch media fellowships for writers, a series of three month intensive writing fellowships whose goal is to develop, support and amplify emerging, diverse voices in feminist, activist, and pop culture media. These vehicles provide a range of voices that analyze the negative images of women and gender roles that are commonly propagated by the media and culture and also spotlight healthy alternatives. No attempt is made to present one unified position, but rather seek to help people think about the messages they are receiving and what may be wrong with them.
