Causes: Health, Surgical Specialties
Mission: The american society of transplant surgeons (the society) and its members are committed to advancing the art and science of transplant surgery through leadership, advocacy, education and training.
Programs: National living donor assistance center (nldac): the nldac was established via a government grant to reduce the financial disincentives to living organ donation and help those on the waiting list for an organ. The grant, to which the society is a sub-contractor, established and now operates a national system to provide reimbursement of travel and subsistence expenses, and other non-medical expenses, that may be authorized by the secretary of health and human services, to individuals being evaluated for and/or undergoing living organ donation. Priority is given to those individuals who cannot otherwise afford the expenses. The society's administers the day-to-day operations of the program with government funds, as outlined on pg. 10.
committee and council programs: the society advances its mission through the work of its committee and council programs. Activities are focused on one or more of the society's strategic goals: advocacy, research, training and professional development and optimal patient care. Examples of activities include the creation of learning modules for the online curriculum, position statements, and other member resources, engagement with key stakeholders, and education and guidance on topics relevant to the field of organ transplantation.
conferences and meetings: the society organizes and hosts a wide variety of meetings designed to support it mission and advance the field of organ transplantation. Topic-driven meetings such as the winter symposium provide in-depth exploration of a narrow topic. Abstract driven meetings such as the american transplant congress provide a forum for exchange of new scientific and clinical information relevant to solid organ and tissue transplantation. Narrowly focused meetings such as the fellows' symposium and leadership development program facilitate members' understanding in select areas identified through a robust needs analysis system.
