Vida provides great opportunities to experience public health and medical care in Latin America. The trip that I went on gave me great experience that I know will stay with me throughout my career in healthcare.

While i’m Guatemala, VIDA allowed me to get a first-hand view on healthcare outside of the United States. It enabled me to put my medical knowledge to use and learn new knowledge in a different part of the world and collaborate with medical professionals. VIDA opened my eyes on a new perspective of healthcare being global healthcare. I am forever grateful for this life-changing experience!

Last summer, I traveled to Guatemala with Vida Volunteer. I was very apprehensive as this was my first solo trip outside of the United States and I did not know anyone else in the program. The trip ended up being one of the greatest experiences. Vida Volunteer made the process of traveling to a new country less stressful by setting up all accommodations. We got a lot of time with patients and I learned so much from each day that I volunteered in the medical clinical. I have wonderful memories from all of our excursions, but by far my greatest memory was staying with a family in the town of Chimaltenango. The family took us in with opens arms and we had so much fun getting to know the family members, making homemade tortillas with the family and having big family dinners. I am so thankful to our family and all members of Vida Volunteer who made this trip incredible!

I went on my first Vida trip in the summer of 2023 to Guatemala. It was such and incredible experience, that this past year I became a campus ambassador to help recruit students for my second trip! I learned so much during my time with Vida! The clinic days gave so many opportunities, and really helped me to solidify my career plans and goals! I couldn’t recommend Vida enough!

I can’t say enough great things about Vids Volunteer! I was part of the veterinary group in Guatemala on one of the trips and we had such a great time! You gain so much hands on experience while getting to serve others. Of course you are there to do a job but you can’t even tell it’s a job because the joy it brings! 10/10 experience! I was a part of the dentistry group in Costa Rica and it was very enriching experience. I learned all the basics of dentistry while also gaining a lot of hands-on experience. The dentists I worked with were really nice and supportive and helped me grow as a pre-dental student. This is a perfect opportunity for those who wish to help underserved communities with little access to healthcare.

My name is Rachel and I visited Costa Rica this past May with VIDA. I was a chaperone for my school and had an absolute blast! I am a nurse and for me it was blessing to give back to others and work with future nursing, medical and dental students. VIDA was extremely professional and organized. I honestly did not know what to expect but it was one of my favorite international trips. I was in Costa Rica about 20 years ago prior to being a nurse and this trip was so special to go back and serve as a nurse. I was having such a great time and was sad to depart home, but hope for an opportunity to serve again.

Hi! My name is Aubri Chapman and I visited Costa Rica with Vida this past May. This experience truly was something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Not only did I learn so much more about Veterinary Medicine but I also got a new perspective on life and how much I have to be grateful for. It was such an amazing 10 days and the staff, doctors, communities and other volunteers made it so memorable!!

This was my first time going to Guatemala and South America in general. It was an amazing experience with others from UC Merced and a time to interact, get to know other cultures, and explore the city. We had the opportunity to zip line, eat amazing food, and explore Hobbitenango, just amazing! It was one to remember as this experience propelled more opportunities as the intention is in healthcare. We had an amazing team leader Amy, and a wonderful team of doctors, interpreters, etc. It was an amazing time and would love the opportunity to go again, 10/10 recommend!

Volunteering to me means dedicating my time and skills to make a positive impact on the lives of others. It’s about stepping out of my comfort zone to address the needs of my community and beyond, offering support, empathy, and care to those who need it most. Volunteering provides a sense of fulfillment and purpose as I contribute to causes that I am passionate about and witness the tangible benefits of my efforts. It also fosters personal growth, cultivates a deeper understanding of diverse experiences, and builds connections with individuals who share a common goal of making a difference. Overall, volunteering is a rewarding experience that enriches both my life and the lives of those I serve.

Volunteered with VIDA twice now during spring break, and I plan to go back again. Not only does this organization create such beautiful experiences with indulging in a new culture, but they inspire me again and again every trip. I decided to do the Veterinary trip to Costa Rica my freshman year of college and immediately fell in love with it. I love the hands on experience I get with all the animals, while also taking part in helping the community and the overpopulation of animals.

I would recommend this experience again and again to anyone who is even slightly interested. The staff is super supportive and helpful, and you get to try things when you are comfortable. It is so hard to gain this way of being hands on with your learning before applying to grad school, so I love that I get that opportunity with VIDA. It is worth every penny and an experience I wouldn't trade for anything!

I found Vida my senior year of high school when someone I knew took her own Vida trip to Costa Rica. It looked so much fun, so I found out how I could get involved with Vida myself. When I started at my University, I was quick to register for the trip. I didn't know what to expect and I was actually very nervous for the trip, however the nerves quickly vanished after the first clinic day. I was instantly inspired by all the veterinarians and loved the fun and helpful environment we were learning in. I loved everything from getting to learn how to place catheters, ET tubes, to helping out during the surgeries or even just setting up and tearing down. The week went by so quickly and I was super sad when it was over, but I left with a full heart and an inspired mind. I hope everyone in the Pre-Vet, Pre Med, and Pre-Dental major gets to experience something as cool as Vida. I cannot thank Vida, and the veterinary team for this amazing trip. I loved every moment and cannot wait to return!

Vida Volunteer has been one of the most eye-opening, rewarding experiences I have ever lived. When I was a freshman, I went on a Vida trip to Costa Rica and I was so scared. I did not know anyone or anything about this trip except that there were like-minded, passionate, and driven individuals who wanted to help others. On this trip, I made the best of friends, teammates, and teachers. I left this trip forever reminiscing on it. I even recently attended my second trip and decided to take on the position of a Vida Volunteer ambassador for my campus to bring this experience to others.

I had the opportunity to participate in not one but TWO trips with Vida. My first trip was in January 2022 to Guatemala and my second trip was in January 2023 to Costa Rica. After 22 days abroad, 96 volunteer hours, and over 400 patients seen, I can confidently say I recommend Vida Volunteer to anyone considering abroad volunteer. Vida Volunteer made me feel safe during both trips, encouraged me to learn more Spanish, learn about healthcare and health disparities, and ultimately made my life more meaningful. My Vida trips solidified my passion for medicine and inspired me to pursue a Masters Degree in Nursing, which I will be starting this fall. I couldn’t be more happy about my experience with Vida.

Being able to selflessly serve others is the most rewarding feeling. Especially here in Guatemala where access to healthcare is very limited, it was such a pleasure to be able to help those in need of medical care and creating relationships with the patients. Additionally, we got to learn about the cultural differences and embrace them, especially the language. This was an opportunity I will never forget and I am very grateful that I got the chance to help those in need.

The staff and doctors were outstanding, patient and inspiring. This is the perfect opportunity to reassure yourself if this is the career for you. This is also a perfect experience to immerse yourself in what it will be like as a Veterinarian. The Trip not only taught me more for my future career, but it has taught me to be very grateful and to be aware of what I have in my life. I was blown away by how amazing my trip with VIDA was. Upon arriving in Costa Rica, I was greeted by Jonathan’s warm greeting and immediately felt welcomed. At all times, Jonathan and Juan Miguel were kind, caring, and warm yet professional. The doctors and staff were caring and informative. We even were able to stay with a host family for 4 nights and, while I was nervous, I had an amazing experience being immersed in the culture and familial life of Costa Rica. The clinic days were hot and long but felt so short because of the constant learning and fun that was endured! I appreciated that there were recreational days that were included in the price of the trip. Overall, VIDA and it’s staff were very professional and everything was organized to a tee with fun time still allotted for. I recommend to everyone thinking about going on a medical, dental, or veterinary service trip!

Vida has provided me with such a wonderful opportunity to see the world through a new lens. My Vida experience was so captivating that I attended four trips. Along with an incredible clinical experience (including many diverse cases specific to these areas) Vida provided me with a cultural immersion that allowed me to see the walk the shoes of families living in communities across Central America. I felt that this trip confirmed my decision for going into healthcare. I learned so much from the doctors and the stories and connections I have built with patients will forever be remembered. My second trip with Vida was just as incredible as the first. I learned so much in the clinics; by the third clinic day I was completing medical histories in Spanish, taking vitals, performing physical exams, and even writing up the diagnosis for some cases I had become familiar with (which were checked by a doctor).

Our patients were so utterly grateful for the care we provided. One woman told us she had never met a doctor who she felt genuinely wanted to help her before, and she was in tears as she thanked us for giving her simple pain meds like ibuprofen and tylenol. We treated another woman who had been living with a painful, itchy fungal infection for seven years, because she didn’t have access to medical care. The treatment was one that I could easily get at a pharmacy back home.

Through Vida, you get to help people who otherwise have no access to any form of medical care. It will change not only their life but yours as well.

The VIDA experience is what I call a win-win-win situation! I’ve already been on 2 medical service trips through VIDA and I’m certainly coming back for more! Through VIDA we get to help and change the lives of patients who don’t have as many resources in healthcare as we do. It is also a learning experience for pre-med/health/dental/vet students as we work with licensed doctors who teach us how to take vitals, diagnose, and formulate a treatment plan. We gain a minimum of 32 hours clinical service additionally which is a perfect addition to students resumes. So in total… patients are helped, students learn, students gain experience…….a win-win-win! On top of the clinical aspect of this trip, there is a cultural immersion which is very beautiful! The balance between culture and clinics is just the perfect amount. In the end of the trip the number of lives changed/helped is read out loud, and in that moment, both times, I knew I made good use of my time.

Volunteered multiple time with this organization and each time i step back from this experience more and more inspired, because sitting back and watching nothing being done was actually a lot more difficult than working my hardest to actually do something. Working alongside the amazing staff, doctors, and volunteers, i was reminded that to make a real difference, you don't have to be the smartest person with the highest degree, the only thing you need is to be the most passionate. With each trip my perspective of the world continued to change, and that's what many of us need I think, a change in perspective.

On top of all of this, this was an incredible learning experience, inside and outside of the clinic. I gained skills relevant to my future career, logged clinical hours, but most importantly learned how to listen. I learned that sometimes the best cure for ailments in these clinics are just the opportunity to be heard, and I think that is the most important part of this organization.

I traveled with my college's Veterinarians Without Borders club to Costa Rica working with Vida. We got the chance to work directly with trained veterinarians to provide clinical services to poverty stricken communities. After taking care of their animals, we got to interact directly with the clients and see the impact our services had on these people's lives. The veterinarians we worked with taught all of us so much and for me personally, they showed me why I want to become a veterinarian myself: to help people through their animals. Most of my club was not very fluent in Spanish and the entire experience was out of our comfort zone. However, the Vida team made us feel comfortable. They taught us some Spanish so we could at least try to communicate, they provided us with insight on the culture of the communities we were in, and they simply provided for our every need. This experience was truly life changing.

I have been working with Vida Volunteers for almost 3 years, and it has been a beyond amazing adventure. My first trip was in 2017, and the trip was nothing but inspirational and uplifting. The volunteers are able to help the communities in a tremendous way, by working with their pets and educating the overall public. It is a great hands-on experience for the volunteers and is character building in numerous ways. This trip creates a positive effect on the volunteers along with the communities and is all around a wonderful experience. After this amazing opportunity, I decided to become the coordinator of the next two trips for my university and working with the Vida staff was seamless. All of the staff members are willing to help, passionate and overall wonderful people. Planning the trip was fun, and the next two trips were just as inspiring as the first. I joined VIDA for a voluntary veterinary trip to Costa Rica for two weeks in the months of April and May in 2019. My experience was truly extraordinary as it allowed me to gain a lot of insight into the world of veterinary as that is what I hope my future career to be. The trip managers and vets part of the organization were super helpful and approachable, and were some of the most friendlt and kindhearted people I had ever met.

The trip was organized very well and we were always kept entertained with the sightseeing and touring in Costa Rica.

There is no better experience out there than the VIDA trip. In a week and a half journey, I've learned more hands on clinical skills and cultural consciousness than in years of training. I would not have traded this experience for the world. If you are even considering traveling abroad, make sure VIDA is on the top of your list.

I absolutely love this organization. I started out as a volunteer in 2018 and then became a campus coordinator for a trip in 2019 since I had such an amazing experience! I went to both Costa Rica and Guatemala and loved every second. Every person on Vida's staff--the doctors, interpreters, team leaders, and communication staff made each volunteer feel safe and welcome. I had never traveled outside the US previous to this trip and I did not know anyone who going on my trip either. However after the trip, I had learned so much from being immersed in another culture and made friends from around the world. My time with Vida completely solidified my passion for becoming a future physician and really helped motivate me to continue on the journey to get me there. Vida loves each and every volunteer and every single community they come into contact with. I will never forget my time as a Vida volunteer and I hope to one day become a part of it again!

I cannot say enough great things about my trip to VIDA. The staff was amazing, everything was very organized, and I cannot wait to go on another trip with them. They facilitated the medical mission trip I always wanted to go on- I was able to meet a very fun group of college kids with the same medical interests as me and get that valuable experience making a difference in the lives of others. I was given the opportunity to volunteer alongside physicians, interpreters, and fellow peers to provide assistance to those who need it. Hi! My name is Madeline Brown, and I just completed my third medical mission trip with Vida. I was given the opportunity to coordinate the past 2 trips for our Vida club at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and I believe these experiences were the highlight of my college years. I can say with confidence that Vida has changed my life in so many meaningful ways—my perspective, goals, career path, and most importantly, Vida has helped to shape the person I strive to become. These trips have taught me valuable medical and clinical skills, respect for the beautiful Guatemalan and Mayan cultures, Spanish ~fluency, and most of all, Vida has motivated me to share my abundance with others.

I highly recommend traveling and learning with Vida—I know I will be coming back someday as a medical student and future physician. Thank you, Vida, for all that you have given to me and to our UWL students. We are so grateful! (2018 trip's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM-YikhsT9c&t=22s )

It was so great that I am now coordinating a trip on my campus this winter break to Guatemala! I think every medical, dental, and veterinary interest should get to experience this trip with Vida. I was always loved and cared for by Vida's amazing staff. It was such a great program and well structured. This organization values making a difference in underserved areas, learning about new cultures, and having a little bit of fun too--and it is evident in every activity you participate in on the trip. I learned so much about medicine and patient care through this experience. The incorporation of recreational days provided the perfect balance between work and play and the opportunity to explore a really beautiful country! The Vida staff consisted of some of the most genuine people I have ever met. They really went above and beyond to make this a fulfilling and fun experience.

I went on 2 VIDA trips, and I loved both experiences. I had an amazing time and got to meet some great people. Both Nicaragua and Guatemala had communities in need, and beautiful cultures. I would definitely recommend VIDA to anyone interested in traveling, while also serving! Safety was never an issue becuase of our amazing staff members (Eduardo, Cynthia, Eli, and Ale) who were always around to assist and make sure we felt comfortable. On this trip, I was able to gain essential clinical skills while living a Nicaraguan or Guatemalan life.

I learned so much in this week, including how to communicate with patients. We had to be very careful with what we said or how we said it because we were there to convey clarity and compassion, not confusion. We were to make sure patients understood their diagnoses because many of these patients were unaware of simple health concerns, such as dehydration or hypertension. Because of this, I gained confidence, and embraced my surroundings. I realized how much I take for granted and how little others may have in life. I was able to meet and bond with many local Nicaraguans, who gifted me with fruits out of appreciation. This international experience showed me a different way of living. It showed me the importance of community and public health.

I travelled as an undergraduate student to Costa Rica with Vida as part of the Veterinary Medicine Program. The staff were so nice and helpful to me as not only a first-generation college student knowing nothing about study abroad, but also as a young girl who had not been outside of her home country before. Once in Costa Rica, the staff was always there to answer questions and help really immerse myself and the rest of the students into the culture we now were apart of. They were the backbone that made the experience one that I will never forget. We received so much hands on experience that benefited our futures, but the impact we left on the communities we helped is what really mattered in the end. This trip gave me memories that will last me a lifetime and I hope to travel again with Vida in one of their sister countries in the near future as a campus coordinator for my home university.

Vida Volunteer was a life-changing experience for me both times I served with them. Traveling to Guatemala and interacting with the people there made the world seem so big yet so small at the same time. Although the healthcare practices of Guatemala are vastly different and issues exist related to hygiene that we don't have to worry about in the United States, human beings everywhere value the same things: love, family, food and water, and a shelter over your head. Especially with the differences in native language, one would've thought that there would have been substantial barriers separating all of us. However, this was not the case.
Vida let me delve into medicine and taught me so much about rural healthcare in Guatemala, while also enabling me to grow as a person and form connections with people from all different backgrounds.

I have volunteered with VIDA for a total of four years now. My first three trips were to Nicaragua and Costa Rica and my fourth was to Guatemala. All three of these countries have so much to offer with natural beauty and unique architecture that makes them something everyone needs to cross off their bucket list. I have learned an exponential amount working in the VIDA clinics and got the chance to participate in integral procedures to my future as a veterinarian. They allow students to participate in everything from general exams, placing catheters, intubating, monitoring anesthesia, and assisting in surgeries. Everything is intently supervised by board certified veterinary professionals so it is a fantastic way to become competent at useful skills in a safe environment.
VIDA assigns a team leader to each group of students and they travel with us to make sure we get to where we need to go safely and efficiently. I made so many fantastic connections with the veterinarians, veterinary support staff, home stay families, and team leaders that will last a lifetime. As my home stay mom told me, "mi casa es tu casa" or "my house is your house". I look forward to hopefully attending my fifth VIDA trip during my years in veterinary school and once again working alongside my friends from this wonderful organization.

I had such an amazing experience on my VIDA trip and made memories I will never forget! I had an amazing time with an awesome group of people. The doctors we worked with were very friendly and really want you to learn and grow. I learned a lot about certain diagnoses thanks to the help of the doctors. I still keep in contact with one of the doctors that was on our trip to this day and she continues to be a great mentor! I've never been to a spanish-speaking country before and loved every minute of it. I came into the program knowing very little Spanish but I learned a lot in the two weeks I was in Guatemala, especially during my home stay (with the most friendly family!). I felt extremely safe every minute of the trip, which was something my parents were concerned about prior to the trip. VIDA does live up to its mission statement and it's beautiful to see the positive impact you as a volunteer make on the communities you serve. I learned so much from the hands on experience I got as we took the medical histories of patients and diagnosed them with the help of doctors. It was truly an amazing experience that allowed us to see how Guatemalans live in both a cultural sense and an economic sense. As I reflect on the past 12 days, I cannot say anything but positive things. I am so thankful for all that Vida has brought me. I have learned so much more than I expected over the past year. To start, the Vida staff is incredible. The doctors promoted such a positive learning environment and confirmed my passion to work in healthcare. The interpreters were so open and knowledgeable which made the clinic days so fun. Also, the team leaders were fantastic - everything was so organized and created an upbeat and positive experience through the duration of the trip. Their vibrant energy was truly contagious.

The staff is warm and welcoming from the moment you apply for a trip, throughout the planning process, and up until (and often times beyond) your departure and return back home. VIDA enables both people and animals in underserved rural communities to have access to basic medical, dental, and veterinary care. Their model allows students in these fields to learn great client communication and technical skills, while giving back to communities in need. Additionally, VIDA's itineraries include components that enable volunteers to experience the culture in these communities, whether it is through home stays or recreational days off. My experience with Vida Volunteer was incredible! I joined the medical team in Nicaragua, and we served 366 patients. I had the opportunity to interview patients firsthand about their history and their current health issues. These interviews allowed me to indulge in a new aspect of patient care that I would not have been able to experience in the United States. Working alongside the physicians in the clinics helped me better understand the thought process behind diagnosing a patient. In addition to valuable clinical experience, Vida provided me with priceless cultural experiences as well. I enjoyed living with local wealthy families in Nicaragua during the homestays. This gave me a chance to practice my Spanish and really get a sense of what it was like to live in Nicaragua. The recreational days that Vida planned for us were exciting, too! We saw volcanoes, zip-lined in the canopy, and swam in a beautiful lagoon. I gave Vida five stars because this experience helped me grow professionally and culturally. I highly recommend this organization!

I just came back from a trip to Guatemala. I was with the Vida dental program and I was able to learn so much about dentistry from the dentists that were there teaching us as they were doing their procedures. I also learned a lot from fellow volunteers that also wish to pursue a career in dentistry. The experience was also really fun. I got to meet a bunch interesting people with the same interests and drives as myself. The trip also allowed me to see many beautiful parts of Guatemala. Even when I got sick the staff quickly came to my aid to try to make me feel better. 10/10 I would recommend this trip to my friends.

I just got back from a Vida trip to Guatemala and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life. Not only did we get to genuinely help so many people, but the doctors were also so helpful and really cared about our learning experience as well. I made some amazing friends and truly got both something out of it as well as giving back. I recommend 100%.

I was mind blown by the extent of work we were tasked with: taking vitals, asking questions, diagnosing, etc. If you are seeking a deeper understanding of the health professions, beyond what you learn from shadowing, this is one of the best opportunities open to you - not to mention the maturity you will nurture from living in a completely different world.

My VIDA Volunteer trip was some of the most memorable experiences I have had. All the staff was very helpful and taught me so much. The homestay and the hotels were very comfortable. The veterinary clinics themselves were phenomenal, I learned and accomplished so much more than I expected. You get the best hands on experiences with the animals, nothing you can get in the US. I would recommend anyone to go on a VIDA that would like veterinary hands on experience that will make you stand out compared to other people.

I have the priveledge of serving on the board of directors for VIDA for the past 6 years as Vice President. VIDA has had such an impact on my life. I am also a Registered nurse. I went on my first VIDA adventure recently to Costa Rica and Nicaragua as a board member to see how all the inner workings of VIDA happen. I also chose to work as a nurse during the trip which was the most rewarding endeavor I have ever experienced. Humbling and life changing. Makes a person really learn to love people where they are and for who they are. Can't wait to go again in the near future. The trip leaves you yearning to go back again before you even finish.

VIDA runs like a well oiled machine but with alot of care and attention built in. Staff are amazing and prepared to handle all the various details of the trip. I had no idea how many details they take care of to make the experience a success. I would never been able to take care of all these things on my own as a tourist. I am amazed that I felt no stress or worries while on the trip. I was well taken care of.

The personal touch with VIDA is hard to ignore. So many relationships have been formed between VIDA and all of the communities that it serves. Homestays are unique to VIDA and quite priceless I might add. It is one thing to be a tourist ..quite another to have the chance to live with the local people, like the local people, for part of your stay. The smiles and hugs from the people you help says it all!!

This is my second time traveling abroad VIDA. This year we visited Costa Rica & Nicaragua and it was absolutely phenomenal. We learned so much in clinic days and the doctors were super friendly. They took every opportunity to teach us about each case and walked through the diagnosis & treatment if we got them wrong. The recreational days were also amazing, it was filled with activities from zip lining, boat riding, salsa dancing, horseback riding as well as getting the opportunity to visit the Pacific ocean. Definitely looking forward to attending a third year in 2016 :) I highly recommend this organization over other medical volunteer trips!

I was actually very nervous to be going to a different country, not knowing what it would be like or who I would be working with but I can say VIDA truly changed my life. From the veterinary experience that I received to the most amazing cultural experience I could have imagined, both gave me the best adventure I could have asked for. The staff is all amazing. They are willing to help in all situations whether it be in the clinic or showing us around the communities. The experience of being in underserved communities allowed me to see how people can be happy even when they don't have things that we in the United States would consider necessities. I came home with a new outlook on life and more pictures than I thought would be possible to take. It was by far the best experience of my life and I can't wait to return next summer!

VIDA is a great program! My parents could never afford to pay for the trip so I had to work hard to gather the money. And let me tell you it was worth every penny! I learned so much it was a little overwhelming at some times! I was a little nervous because a lot of these experiences were "firsts" for me but the doctors were patient and helped me gain confidence. I liked that there were small and large animal days. I also liked that there were recreational days in between so there was a balance of work and fun. My favorite rec day was zip lining! I jumped out of my comfort zone and tried this and It was amazing! The rain forests are magnificent! We also saw a family of howler monkeys in the trees!! There were some cons: the bus rides can be pretty bumpy because of the rural areas we visit and one staff member was really impatient with everyone. However the positives outweigh the negatives. This was a big motivator for me and I am more determined to push through undergrad school!

My advice...GO ON A VIDA TRIP!!! Everything about my trip to Nicaragua was incredible! Vida had great staff, learning opportunities, recreational activities, and cultural immersions! I could not have asked for a better way to spend my time over winter break. I highly recommend this trip for anyone thinking about medical, dental, or vet careers. Unlike other volunteer experiences, Vida provides great hands-on learning. This was the first clinical experience I had and it was totally worth it. As soon as I got back to school I talked to our global eduction department to set up a trip for our school. If your school doesn't have a trip of its own I definitely recommend the open trip because you meet amazing and dedicated students from all over the country at different universities. All of the students and staff are still in contact via social media, which I have never had with another trip.

I am a pre-vet student in Arizona who went on a VIDA trip in 2013 and again as a Trip Coordinator in 2014.
This summer I spent two weeks in Costa Rica and Nicaragua as a volunteer with VIDA, Volunteers for Intercultural and Definitive Adventures. Our trip included a Veterinary team, a Dental team, and a Medical team. Our goal was to serve the impoverished communities in the area while gaining knowledge and experience in clinical settings. This trip was amazing! We did so much hands-on learning under the guidance of the veterinarians and technicians. In just 8 clinic days we performed 74 spays and neuters, over a hundred consults and treated over 210 cattle, pigs and horses. I placed IV catheters, intubated dogs, and assisted in surgeries. This trip has been an experience of a lifetime that I recommend to all pre-vet students. I hope that when I become a veterinarian I can take time to do a trip like this and help future students get similar experiences.

I learned just how much one toothbrush can help, what it feels like to teach someone how to brush their teeth for the first time, how much your time and effort means to someone who is less privileged than you. The team leaders were the perfect blend of friend and leader, empowering us to do our best work and have fun by leading by example. The professional staff was very much the same and were more than happy to answer any of the questions we had; the trip was very much an educational experience. All in all, I would absolutely return and plan on doing so next year.

I served as the CFO and Treasurer on the Board for five years. I personally watched VIDA grow from a kitchen table idea to a respected organization. I provided support from the USA side of the business by sourcing supplies, medicines, promotional products and financial services. I had visited Costa Rica a couple times before in my life so I understood some of the challenges the organization faced with transportation, shipping, housing, communication within the country. I loved hearing all the stories from organization leaders and other members of the board about the successes we were achieving. Nothing, absolutely nothing they said could have prepared me for my first VIDA trip... I was humbled. We visited communities with no running water, homes without windows, no trash removal, no electricity, outdoor kitchens and bathrooms, entire communities with no cars, people washing their clothes in the river.... And they looked happy! They live in small, strong, tight knit communities, older generations helping raise new generations. Entire families helping to support the family business whether it is shoe making or embroidery or furniture making. The people of Central America are looking for what we are all looking for; they just want good medical care and dental care for themselves and their loved ones. They want cleaner, healthier living and when that help and education come to them, they are so very grateful. It brings peace to the parents when they know their child can live a long, happy, healthy life. For the VIDA volunteers I shared this journey with, their lives and vision for their futures were forever changed. That is the power of volunteering and the power of VIDA.

The trip was overall really great, I just felt that the biggest issue was an all-around lack of communication between everyone. Between the trip coordinator, our guide, the families we stayed with, between everyone and the volunteers, etc...It led to some frustrations that could have been avoided.

I went on a medical and dental trip with VIDA to Costa Rica during winter break of 2013. I was impressed with how smoothly the program is run, and by how big of an impact all the volunteers and staff had on the communities we served in the two Costa Rican towns we visited. Not only is this a great opportunity to help communities in need, it also is a great chance to gain valuable career experience and insight. All of the doctors and dentists were incredibly knowledgable and very helpful and engaging. The VIDA staff were great when it came to organizing the recreational activities we had (hiking and canopy zip-lining), as well as organizing smaller things like going out for meals. The VIDA trip was incredibly influential in my mindset of my future career as a physician, as well as on my overall outlook on global communities like the two we visited in Costa Rica. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who wants to gain professional and cultural experience, or for anyone who just wants to make a different in impoverished communities!

I had the opportunity to go on a trip to Costa Rica with VIDA as a medical volunteer, and I can positively tell you it was the most amazing experience of my life! The staff were highly friendly and useful (in fact I'm dealing with separation depression right now...), and I believe the trip was quite well planned. We had 5 days of clinic, and 2 days of fun activities including swimming in a river, going to a tropical jungle, visiting a waterfall, visiting a water fall and ZIP-LINING. We spent the New Year there which was different for me in a good way I personally learned a lot in the clinic and thoroughly enjoyed the activities. The interpreters were extremely helpful with their translations, the doctors were quite down to earth and knowledgeable, and our trip coordinators were nice and helpful all the time. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND VIDA TO EVERYONE!!
