Mission: The American Safe Climbing Association was founded to replace deteriorating fixed anchors on historic climbs throughout the United States. Routes established as long ago as the 1930s sometimes have fixed anchors - pitons, slings, and bolts - that modern climbers rely on for their lives. Some guides have replaced some routes, but an overwhelming majority of older routes are becoming more and more dangerous over the years. While recreational rock climbing is obviously inherently risky, the replacement of old fixed gear saves lives, especially when rappeling (descending) off of peak tops and cliffs, when two or more lives hang from small pieces of rusty steel or old nylon.
