Mission: The American Indian Ritual Object Repatriation Foundation addresses the problem of the sale of ceremonial material and funerary objects in the private sector. Not covered by Native American Graves Protection Repatriation Act, (1990) dealers and auction houses have been without ethical codes that confine the sale of these items. In addition to providing standards and procedures for repatriation,we have created strategies for returns in the private sector and monitored the major auction houses during their Indian Art sales. Our current goal is to increase education in the private sector now that NAGPRA is fully in place. This means both continuing our work of repatriation from the private sector and monitoring the art market. Strategies include alerting Nations when items come up for sale, educating collectors on the distinction between American Indian art appropriate for sale and ceremonial materials of living cultures, and acting as a liaison when requested with dealers, auction houses or museums.
