I have had to use KLS for a domestic violence based divorce and custody issues. My former spouse was in Iraq and came home with SEVERE PTSD. Not only were protection from Abuse papers immediately filed, but I had outstanding attorneys throughout. He as finally declared unfit as a parent after the attorneys found “lost” military paperwork on his covered up charges. They treated me with respect and deep care during a long court process. Their knowledge of my rights under the law was excellent. I recommend them for those struggling with legal issues and have low incomes. You will get an attorney at the same caliber as an expensive big name law firm.

I had never been evicted before and was completely at a loss about how to navigate the process of appealing my eviction if I lost. Not to mention, I was struggling to understand the do's and don'ts of the legal system. Initially, I started the process on my own, but as the date of the eviction hearing approached, I began to feel uneasy. I wasn't in a financial position to hire an attorney, and the overwhelming fear and anxiety about the possibility of my daughter and me becoming homeless within a couple of weeks weighed heavily on me. It was then that I was recommended to contact Kansas Legal Services, which I did. Within a couple of days, I heard from their Topeka office and was set up to work with Mr. Hahs from their Dodge City office. At this point, he was advising me, but I was still representing myself.

I was completely shocked after getting off the Zoom call from my eviction hearing and still couldn't believe that the ruling went 100% in favor of the landlord. Numerous procedures had not been followed correctly prior to the eviction ruling, and I couldn't fathom how this was the outcome. I had to be out within 24 hours with nowhere to go, and I felt utterly defeated.

Thankfully, I didn’t dwell in sorrow for too long before I heard from Mr. Hahs. He immediately guided me through the process of appealing the case and had the appeal filed within hours. During this time, Mr. Hahs effectively represented my interests and skillfully navigated the court proceedings by demonstrating a deep understanding of landlord-tenant laws. He was incredibly responsive to my questions and concerns throughout the entire process and strategically negotiated a favorable settlement.

I appreciated Mr. Hahs's calm demeanor in this stressful situation. He undoubtedly made a difficult process much more manageable. I highly recommend and thank Noah Hahs and his team at Kansas Legal Services for anyone facing eviction. I couldn't have done it without him and his team!

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Matt Keenan and his team at KLS. I was being sued on a medical collections. I contacted KLS and less then 24 hours later Matt contacted me and said he would take the case.
I am so thankful that he did. Matt and his team were very reassuring and communicated with me every step of the way.
Matt was able to negotiate my amount down from 6200 to 1000. Which I was able to payoff and have the case dismissed. This all took place in less than a month.. I am so very grateful. Thank you Matt and everyone at KLS.

An attorney at Kansas Legal Services agreed to help with a matter I had pending against me that I believed to be frivolous. It was brought by someone I had helped who was going through a difficult time.

The KLS attorney was from Dodge City. He was very patient and helpful. The day of the trial he came ahead of time so we could meet in person and talk over my side of the story and the services I had given her.

During the trial he did the presentation of my side very clearly. As the trial unfolded, I did not even have to get on the stand. He was able to help the judge and the other attorney to see that she really had no evidence to support her claims. The case was dismissed. I was so relieved.

He was so helpful and I am so grateful.

Kansas Legal Services is a wonderful organization that helps my victims with their civil cases when our office (the county prosecutor) can't. They're a great resource for our community and I appreciate everything they do!

I have nothing but good things to say about KLS, they have helped many of the people I refer to them. I am grateful for nonprofits like KLS.

Kansas Legal Services has been a God send for me. I was served papers and in the process of being sued for a medical bill by the local hospital even though I had insurance at the time. I made several attempts to work something out with the billing department but was told the bill was too old for them to bill insurance. The hospital would not relent and continued to have a collection agency pursue payment from me. I had heard of KLS helping indigent and less fortunate people and i was desperate for someone with the knowledge of how the legal process works to help me fight back. Not being able to afford the bill and feeling wronged by the fact that they should have billed insurance I desperately reached out to KLS in hopes that they would be able to set the record straight. I filled out the application and received a call the next day. After explaining my situation I was told my info would be forwarded to the correct department and the call ended there. I hung up the phone feeling defeated and was sure I was going to get the short end of the stick. To my surprise I was contacted by Matt Keenan, only an hour after speaking to KLS. He asked me a few questions and within minutes told me he personally would take my case and that he was "ready to go to war". Matt diligently worked with me and kept in contact with me about the status of my case almost daily. He stayed positive during the whole process which helped me immensely and even when I thought we were at a stuck point, he pushed through it and in the end he was able to break through the chaos and came out victorious. I can't thank KLS and especially Matt Keenan enough for being so patient, kind and understanding of my situation. I've never had someone fight so hard on my behalf. The Whole KLS team was awesome to work with and have by my side. They made the impossible, possible, and for that I am eternally greatful. Kansas Legal Services has been such a help! My year was not ending well and I was struggling and stressed over an unfair judgement brought upon me by HaysMed’s collection team. I sought out assistance and was blessed to have Matt Keenan working on my case. He was able to quickly get the judgement removed - which was something I had been trying to do for years! His staff was respectful and kind. They understood my concerns, my fears, and why it was so important for me to get it taken care of. Matt would speak to me with some much positive and grace. Mt. Carmel Redevelopment Corporation, Inc.'s Willa Gill Center staff have referred clients to Kansas Legal Services for "Unlawful Eviction" Cases, Discrimination complaints and Social Security Benefit denials. The Kansas Legal Services Team is very helpful regarding Outreach for clients to make contact with.

My experience with the Kansas Legal Services was very positive. I have a disability that over many years of emergency medical care; ended up piling up a large medical debt that I knew that I would never have paid off before the end of my life. Kansas Legal Services helped guide me through the negotiation process of this debt with minimal anxiety.

I would recommend to ALL Kansans who are eligible to seek legal counsel with this organization to do so. Came to them because I was being improperly garnished and they went above and beyond not only to fix the garnishment issue but also to get the debt removed entirely. They were very professional and helpful during the whole proccess

I was referred to KLS (Seneca branch) by my advocate at The Crisis Center, where I was receiving services as a victim of domestic violence. I needed a legal referral because the abuse didn't stop when that romantic relationship ended. In fact, it escalated quickly when my abuser decided (on 3 different occasions) to misuse court services as a means of continuing his control over me. A retaliatory protection from stalking order was filed against me the same day the abuser broke into my home, cornered me in my bathroom, and screamed at me, resulting in me calling the police. The abuser beat me to the courthouse, filing first to protect his image, influence the story and shape what was bound to happen next. The judge (in MS CO) would not let me file a counter protection order against the abuser, even though I had a legal right to do so. The local undersheriff even told me he didn't think the Judge was accurately protecting my rights. That's when I sought help and was paired with attorney Ben Romney. Ben helped me understand my rights, my options, and tried to advocate for my rights with the judge. Ben guided me about what evidence I should keep on hand in case it was needed and offered suggestions about when to push issues verses when to just lay low hoping not to stir the pot. Ben was available to me when the abuser (after filing the PFS which made it so I could not communicate with him) got angry that I would not communicate about giving him access to his personal belongings, which he'd left behind six months ago at the home I owned. When I followed the order & refused contact, the abuser then took me to small claims court. The Judge chided the abuser for that sequence of issues and dropped the small claims filing. Ben also supported me after the abuser claimed theft of personal property from his home, which resulted in the local police performing a search warrant of my home (no items seized, no charges filed). Ben was prompt to respond to my communications. He was professional and offered solid guidance. At the same time, he was a good listener. He was compassionate, trying to offer thoughts and resources about abusive issues. I never felt like I had to convince Ben to believe me. I believe he read over the evidence I provided and asked questions to get to the bottom of issues. He was good about asking me what resolutions I was hoping for. I feel like I was a DV victim, afraid to be in the same courtroom with the man who abused me, but also a victim of litigation abuse - scared of the judge and cops. Having Ben stand up for me helped me be more confident and calm. It was a blessing that a rational, educated outsider was advocating for me in a situation that was highly emotionally charged. I'm thankful that my referral led to KLS and to Ben. I am grateful that my services were paid for in full by a grant for DV victims. I hope I never need to use this service again but if I do, I'll be requesting Ben's help again.

I work for a non profit mental health center and work closly with Kansas Legal Services. The team in Emporia is always responsive, supportive and able to assist our consumers. Many of our consumers have desires to work but past life circumstances make that difficult. Having them offer expungment supports has allowed a future to be opened for many and allows them to become contibuting members of our community and better their own life. We are extremly lucky to have a dedicated and passionate team that takes our calls and supports our consumers through lifes hurdles. KLS is a fantastic agency and a much needed part of the communities we serve.
