My experience as a volunteer with Peacework in Guatemala was fantastic. The most memorable part of my trip was that the volunteer work allowed us to work alongside local community members.

I was around 58 when my thumb started giving me problems. As time passed i had other symptoms; hand tremors, restless sleep, muscle weakness, cognitive decline, loss of vision in an eye. At 60 i was diagnose of Multiple Sclerosis, i was on Avonex for two years, they helped alot but not for long. This organization has an amazing impact on women in the area. Instead of leading with abortions, they are willing to spend time with each woman to understand their unique story and work on plan together. This can be a scary and lonely time for women and PRC walks alongside them so they are NEVER alone and feel there are no options.

Here's what I left on their Facebook page. It was the 2nd time I had to leave this review , because the organization deleted my first review. I imagine it was because I speculated there was a bait and switch going on. Seems a conflict of interest to me that a breeder also rescues. Makes sense, but you drive 2 hours for a specific dog and then get told he's not a good fit but you're wanting a dog so....<br>My previous 1 star review was removed. I believe anybody with children should be aware of how we were handled when interviewing to adopt. I inquired about Genghis back in August. I never heard back after a few weeks and after a follow up and discussion about my thorough application and living situation (house, new fenced in yard, 2 children under 4 who are extremely gentle and respectful of all animals, I have a lifetime of terrier experience as well as over 10 years of silky experience), we took the plunge and drove out over 2 hours to visit the dog where he was being fostered. We were asked to drive down for the visit because B****** had recently had surgery. I myself had had a rather extensive surgery less than 2 weeks prior, so the inconvenience was mutual. Still, I was confident in my sons and myself and my mother in law to make the trek. It would be worth it to have a silky in our lives again.<br><br>Upon arriving, B******'s home was very clean and pleasant. There was a 2 car garage converted into a kennel that had at least 10 dogs and she probably had 6 inside her home. I waited for her to put the dogs away since we were seeing Genghis, but she waved us all in. I assumed she knew what her dogs' temperaments were and didn't question her. In hindsight, I really regret that. We had been there 20 minutes and had had a pleasant time. Genghis was in my lap for most of that time and my youngest son was standing at the couch where B****** was sitting and was smiling at her. Her own silky suddenly jumped from behind her and bit my 18 month old just below his eye. This injury could've been very very bad. Even B****** kept saying, "oh that's bad. That's bad." This attack was completely unprovoked by my son. He suffered broken skin, bruising, and a black eye. He still has a scar today. <br><br>I understand small dogs, and I know terriers and small dogs can have this trait. All dogs can suddenly attack unprovoked. The problem here is that my sons had been calm the entire time they were there and the attack was completely unrpovoked as well as with how B****** handled this. It happened so fast that my 18 month had no idea it was a dog that did it. Thank God he isn't emotionally scarred about dogs after this. <br><br>Naturally, I wanted to leave right away. We had made the drive, spent time with Genghis and bonded. It seemed to me that we were coming to adopt him. When I asked for help or what to do about the bite, B****** said I should get my son a cold compress, but didn't offer me one in her home where this would've been immediate and convenient. Instead she got the biter and another dog who was barking immediately out of the room. When I asked what the next step was in adoption (remember, Genghis had nothing to do with this altercation and had been in my lap the whole time), she said, "terriers are just not a good match for children." At this point I'm furious, because she knew very well I had 2 children and that we were driving over 2 hours. Her handling of this entire situation was incredibly irresponsible. <br><br>I am not upset that I didn't walk away with a dog that day. Disappointed, yes. I felt a bond with Genghis, but even had I not, I would've been ok with leaving without a dog. The practice of inviting children into the home and then making a blanket statement about children and terriers not mixing is what I find incredulous. I regret having donated in the past and put my son in danger.

Velocity of Books began because of 2 young boys and their mother's concern that there are kids in our community who have never had a book of their own. Beginning with book swap stations at a local elementary school, with donated books, VOB has quickly expanded. They now have these swap stations at multiple schools, and have sent books to prisons, shelters and senior centers. With 2 county libraries closed this summer Carolyn arranged with a local school principal to set up an interim library and had thousands of books delivered so that the school kids will still have access to books for their summer reading.<br>Carolyn Thompson works tirelessly to promote literacy. She has connected groups who have books with those who need them, fostering change on a large scale.<br>On July 16, 2016 she organized the first of what will most likely be an annual event: the Rockville Rock 'n Read, a four hour festival which included a live band, an author appearance, games and balloons for kids, and most importantly, 10,000 FREE books! Besides making a difference in our community, she is offering the Rock 'n Read template to organizations in other areas in order to help them run their own successful events.

Not a very well organized program or secured. We need to insure that our animals are going to safe foster homes and I know that animals are being sent to foster homes without information on the foster or direct contact information to someone other than an email that takes a while to get a response.

I have always found it easier to be kind to animals than to some people that I have known. Whenever I have needed to add to four-legged family, I have always found the most wonderful animals at the Montgomery County Humane Society. This organization operates primarily through the kindness of volunteers and always puts the animals first. Every animal is spayed or neutered before he/she is released to a "forever" home. Every time I visit, all the animals seem so happy, so I know they are being well taken care of. My current felines were once boarders there - Riley, the 20 black Siamese (by voice) and One-eyed Jack Sparrow (he had lost his eye before being surrendered). Riley is my lap cat, while Jack keeps everybody hopping . He is constantly trying to jump to the top of my dining room table and has no distance vision - so he ends up catching the table cloth and pulling everything to the floor. It's hard not to love the organization that has brought such joy to my life!
