Review for Soldiers' Angels, San Antonio, TX, USA
I've been with Soldiers Angels for quite awhile and I grow more and more disconcerted by what I see leadership do.
The toxicity levels of the Angel Bakers is atrocious. Of the many groups I've worked with to send baked goods to deployed service members, this is the first group I've come across that doesn't actually care about the safety of the service member. Most don't even know what "Desert Safe" means when it comes to ingredients and recipes. They care more about using non-shelf stable baking ingredients then they do the safety of our service members. Angel Bakers doesn't require people to follow rules that would ensure baked items don't grow mold and other dangerous bacteria. When anyone brings this up, they're attacked on the Facebook group. We've even had service members repeatedly ask that Angel Bakers use shelf-stable ingredients and they go ignored or comments are that the service member is an "idiot who doesn't know anything." Leadership of this group does not hold people accountable and does not promote a safe environment for service members. Leadership of this group is one of the toxic members that berates people for trying to protect the service members. I'm not impressed with this specific group of the Soldiers Angels Organization and I think it needs a complete overhaul or removal. It is inevitable that something will go wrong and the person who will be caught in the crosshairs are the very people we're supposed to protect...our service members.
On another note, I would like to see Soldiers Angels do better on outreach. I see very little Marines and no Coast Guard on our sign up lists and that tells me not enough people are reaching out to tell them about this program. Anytime I try to do so myself, they've never even heard of Soldiers Angels. Outreach should be more important.
There is also a lax of accountability when it comes to requests. We're supposed to be supporting deployed service members and veterans. Not Angel's kids and grandkids. It seems more like anyone can put in a request for anything and it will get approved.
I stay because while the program isn't impressive and has so many glaring holes, it is a way for me to support service members, which is and has always been my goal.
