Review for Soldiers' Angels, San Antonio, TX, USA
I am so sad that this wonderful vets organization has fallen into the corporate mindset, employing highly paid fundraisers instead of putting donations directly in the hands of soldiers, and hiring a president who was fired from her last job. I was so impressed with the original founders dedication and her acceptance of a salary of $1 per year.
I do understand that as an organization grows there are growing administrative needs, but really the needs of our vets should come before staff salaries. The last straw was asking volunteers to pay for the privilege of volunteering. I, as a senior on a fixed income, gave of my time instead of money, apparently that wasn't enough. Now they demand a nominal, but nonetheless additional monetary donation. I will be seeking out another of many veteran support organizations to volunteer with. Patti your dream was so wonderful..... to bad you have given in to the corporate mentality and are willing to see thousand of donated monies go to fundraisers and administrator instead of to the troops. Especially now when there are thousands and thousands of vets who have returned home with permanent needs that will require far more than a card or package to be met.
I am so very, very disappointed. From the original vision in 2003 which was so personal and so selfless, now I am afraid the mission has taken a back seat to the desire for corporate growth.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I would like to see a return to the personal relationship of administration to volunteers as it was in Pasadena. I would pay professional fundraisers based only on a full return on donations. In other words if $100,000 is used for a fundraising project the professional fundraiser would only be paid after proving his/her worth and that no donation monies would be used to pay the professional fundraiser. BTW what percentage of admin jobs are going to vets?
