Review for Knights of Heroes Foundation - Rocky Mountain Ascent, Colorado Springs, CO, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am a donor, but I started volunteering for the camp after I saw how great they handled their interaction with the kids, as well as how cautious they were with their budget. They stretch every penny as far as it will go, and the leadership team are all tremendous servants. Gold Star kids like mine have been so blessed to have had Knights of Heroes help mentor them through the years. I would HIGHLY recommend donating to this wonderful organization.

Review for Freedom Alliance, Winchester, VA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Freedom Alliance has been there for our family since my kids were in high school. Wanda and her team helped us realize that my kids' dream colleges could be a possibility. We have faced so much uncertainty since my husband's death, and it was such a relief to know that Freedom Alliance was there to help support us. They are passionate, fun, understanding, and have become an extension of our family.

I am a board member of Knights of Heroes, but I also volunteer my time as a camp worker during the week of camp. I continue to be amazed at how we are able to give kids hope and a rewarding camp experience that will benefit them throughout life. We teach them values they will need in life, and we help them conquer fears and empower them. The mentors they have during camp week offer encouragement to complete activities (e.g. rock climbing, mountain bike riding, etc) that they may not have otherwise thought they were capable of doing.

The camp also allows these kids to bond with other military children who have lost fathers and gives them a connection they may not have otherwise had. My two kids attended the camp for about 10 years, and now that they are adults, some of their best friends are kids they met at Knights of Heroes. Having that came connection with other kids allows them to feel they are not alone through their journey.

Knights of Heroes gives these kids experiences and connections that they would otherwise not have. I am incredibly blessed to be a part of this awesome organization, and I am thankful my own two kids had the opportunity to benefit from KOH!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have it year-round so more kids would benefit from it!

I continue to be amazed by Knights of Heroes and the impact it has on children who have lost a parent. My children spent 10 years participating, and now they give back when and where they can. I continue to volunteer for the camp, and I am also now a board member. During camp week, I have the opportunity to see the impact the camp has on these children. They connect with friends they have made from past camp years, and they have a respect for our mentors who give of their time to help shape theses children into young adults. Camp is not only fun, but it is a safe emotional place for these kids who have lost so much, and it allows them to have connections that will last them a lifetime. I am so grateful that Knights of Heroes continues to serve this community!

My children have attended this camp for the past 11 years, and now they have graduated because they aged out. However, they have come to appreciate Knights of Heroes so much, they want to give back and have a positive impact on other campers. They are back this year in staff/volunteer roles. My son is a mentor to a younger camper, and my daughter is working on the rock climbing crew. They are spending about 10 days for their summer in Colorado to help give back to an organization that has given them so much!

I continue to volunteer to help with food at camp, so I am involved on a regular basis. I can tell you Knights of Heroes does everything they can to stretch ever dollar donated to them, and they ensure the donated funds go to support the campers. This is a fantastic non-profit and anything you can do or give to support them goes a long way.

Review for Knights of Heroes Foundation - Rocky Mountain Ascent, Colorado Springs, CO, USA

This program has had the single most impact on both of my children. My children have attended other groups for KIA survivors, but Knights of Heroes has provided 10 years of consistent mentorship. It's not just one week of camp, it's relationships that have been built so these kids have role models and people they are accountable to, which is very important in the teen years. They reach out to their mentors during the year, and these relationships have created a support network that my kids rely upon during the tougher times in life.

Knights of Heroes and its impact on my kids is profound...they are stronger, more self-assured, more compassionate people because of this organization. It's not just a week at camp doing fun things, it's a week of growth that facilitates a year's worth of self-confidence, as well as life-long friendships with other kids whose fathers have been killed.

Lastly, they stretch every penny they receive and use it more wisely than any non-profit I have ever seen. They are incredibly appreciative of any and all donations...be it monetary or in-kind. People often wonder if their donations are being used wisely, and from my 10 years of experience with them, they do a fantastic job!

Review for Fallen Soldier Memorabilia Boxes Inc, Paso Robles, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My family was blessed to have received a memory box from this organization to honor my late husband, Captain Alan Rowe. He was killed in Iraq in 2004, and this organization was generous enough to provide us with this wonderful keep-sake to help keep his memory alive, and also to help us all remember his service and sacrifice. The craftsmanship is like nothing I have seen, and it's a special place where we keep items that were near and dear to him.

This organization is fantastic, and I hope you will support them however you can!

Both of my children attend Knights of Heroes as campers. This was their 9th year with the program, and they continue to benefit from it and the LOVE it! The camp connects them with other kids who have experienced a similar loss, and it provides them consistent mentoring year after year. While no one or group can take the place of their father, Knights of Heroes has filled a part of that void for both of my kids, and it wonderful way to show them there are so many Americans who recognize their loss and are trying help. I am so blessed and thankful to have the KOH volunteers as a part of our lives!

My son, Blake, has attended the camp twice now and the impact is unbelievable! He is 10-years-old and at a point where he is growing into a man. Knights of Heroes has helped teach him things I could never have done alone, and the friendships he has made with other children of fallen service members will last his entire life. The influence on him has been profound, and he will tell you it's the most meaningful thing he has ever been a part of, as well as the most fun! The camp is a huge blessing to our family, and we are thankful they continue to make a difference in the lives of these young boys.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my son, as well as the other boys who have attended the camp.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have a better appreciation for all these volunteers do for my son and my family!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

watching my son experience things that I am unable to provide him.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

generous, tireless, and loved working with the boys!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

make a difference in the lives of other boys who have lost their dads.

Ways to make it better...

There is nothing I would change about my experience with this organizaion.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Providing the camp to as many boys as possible, but being limited by funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

the camp is the best thing that has happened to my son since his father was killed.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
