The prestigious and historic Jones -Haywood Dance School , Inc., of Washington, DC under the leadership of its Artistic Director, Sandra Fortune-Green and the professional visiting artists/staff continues to "Pay it Forward" by embracing/educating the children (girls/young ladies) in Ward 4 and its surrounding communities in classical ballet, modern, jazz, and tap dancing on a very small and limited budget. June. 7, 2015, Spring Concert, Jones Haywood celebrates 74 years in the preservation and presentation of the Arts in Dance. My grand-girls, (6/8 years old) first dance debut ; their mom and I were gasping for breath as we watched them dance with much with grace and poise....our future leaders of America. More importantly, the discipline of their minds, sparkle / gleam in their eyes , and the smiles on their faces kept them on pointe. Dance .. its "freedom of bodily expression (defined talent) and movement" is "priceless" to all dancers young and young-at heart. Mission: Started in 1941, Jones-Haywood Dance School is seen as a leader in dance education, pre- professional training, discipline and integrity in the classical ballet schedule. We are committed to building new audiences through innovation and current choreography and inspiring youth at all social levels.
Results: Our students travel to New York and France for advanced training as well as have an opportunity to perform in the summer program on Martha's Vineyard.
Target demographics: Expose children of all backgrounds to the 400 year old artistic discipline of ballet
Direct beneficiaries per year: 25 at risk children and 20 homeless children in DC
Geographic areas served: Washington, DC; Maryland, Virginia
Programs: Arts education in inner city schools, exposure to the arts in New York, History of Music

colberpl 06/25/2015 Thank you so much! I started at the school when I was 9 years old and my Mom became very heavily involved to support the school. I am 58 today and back as volunteer to help Jones-Haywood. It means so very much to us that you took the time to write this excellent review and moreover about our concert. Even working with all the girls is like watching a young Mrs. Michelle Obama come through the doors each day! The young girls inspire me! Hopefully your review will help us generate the funds we so desperately need to continue to pay our teachers, improve our building and provide more performances!
