The prestigious and historic Jones -Haywood Dance School , Inc., of Washington, DC under the leadership of its Artistic Director, Sandra Fortune-Green and the professional visiting artists/staff continues to "Pay it Forward" by embracing/educating the children (girls/young ladies) in Ward 4 and its surrounding communities in classical ballet, modern, jazz, and tap dancing on a very small and limited budget. June. 7, 2015, Spring Concert, Jones Haywood celebrates 74 years in the preservation and presentation of the Arts in Dance. My grand-girls, (6/8 years old) first dance debut ; their mom and I were gasping for breath as we watched them dance with much with grace and poise....our future leaders of America. More importantly, the discipline of their minds, sparkle / gleam in their eyes , and the smiles on their faces kept them on pointe. Dance .. its "freedom of bodily expression (defined talent) and movement" is "priceless" to all dancers young and young-at heart. Join me and provide a "fresh start" and allow a child's dream to become a "reality" become a sponsor and donate/contribute today.

colberpl Thank you so much! I started at the school when I was 9 years old and my Mom became very heavily involved to support the school. I am 58 today and back as volunteer to help Jones-Haywood. It means so very much to us that you took the time to write this excellent review and moreover about our concert. Even working with all the girls is like watching a young Mrs. Michelle Obama come through the doors each day! The young girls inspire me! Hopefully your review will help us generate the funds we so desperately need to continue to pay our teachers, improve our building and provide more performances!

I was lucky. I grew up with a birds eye view of the DMV dance community. Or perhaps it was a a bottoms up view.
Our family run shop, Artistic Dance Fashions, fit dance wear and shoe to thousands of gifted students and professionals for 53 years. Mr.Mack was called to his maker 12/3/2013. He was a champion and friend to the trail blazing, Jones and Haywood School. Jomes Haywood Schools alway stands for excellence in dance.

I grew up two blocks away from Jones-Haywood Dance school and passed it routinely each day as a Youth. As a male growing up on the street of Washington D.C. I found football and other sports an interest as an after school pastime. I barely took notice to the young dancers frequenting this location which appeared to be just another corner house in the neighborhood.

It wasn't until I was a young adult that I learned that this house was a fully functioning Professional Dance Company. It was in the late 70's, after learning first hand as a college football player the benefits of ballet for speed, quickness and agility ( As a defensive back I took ballet classes at my University and became one of the fastest and quickest players on the field), that one of my friend invited me to train with the Washington Ballet. I was shocked to find that I was going to this same house I passed every for over twenty years.

The basement was converted to a large dance studio filled with amazing dancer... The best kept Secret in Washington D.C.! I'm still amazed at what the dedicating people here at Jones-Haywood were able to accomplish under the cover of 'inner cities blues'. One can just imagine what kind of ballet dancer could be produced if they truly had the proper resources! Makes you wanna holla and throw up Both your hands!

As a little girl, I dreamed of becoming a ballerina...and my parents supported that dream. My father to,d me that to be the best, I must train with the best. So, in 1978, I started training at Jones-Haywood. I trained four and sometimes five days a week. I had countless black leotards and pale pink Capezio tights with the seams down the back. I rode three metro buses from MLK Ave in Ward 8 to my classes at Georgia Ave & Delafield Place...eager to get to class to learn more. The dance teachers not only developed me as a dancer, but took interest in me as a person. They extended much love and patience during my years there. I cannot think of my upbringing in dance without thinking of this school. If I had to live my life over again, the only thing I would change is that I would have trained at this school until I couldn't train any longer. If you are looking for a great atmosphere with awesome instructors and a foundation that is unshakeable, THIS IS IT!

I never actually took class at this school but in the 1970's heard about it and was lucky enough to dance with a wonderful dancer who had trained there. At that time there were not a lot of African-American ballet dancers and they were not given the respect and opportunities from the ballet community that they deserved. This school played a part in changing that! Over the years, I have met other dancers who trained at the studio and they all speak with reverence of the Jones-Haywood Dance School. I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet the director of this school who gave so much to so many people. She trained wonderful dancers who were also wonderful people.

This is a special place and I hope that it is always around to continue to train and inspire generations to come

Jones-Haywood Dance School has been an integral part in the lives of so many young dancers in the Washington Metropolitan area. Where you find young talented dancers, one can bet they've been a part of or know someone who studied there. At a time when arts programs are threatened in many schools, the Haywood Dance school continues to enrich and expose young black aspiring dancers positively toward professional careers in dance and choreography. One former student and now Master Professor of dance, Mr. Adrian Vincent James, had the great opportunity of studying dance there as a young student and has had an extensive and successful career performing, teaching and inspiring. He has traveled globally enriching the lives of young aspiring dancers. Mr. James' dedication and love of the art of dance is a true representation of the impact of his training at the Jones-Haywood school.

Jones-Haywood!!! Where would I be without J and H? I moved to the area in 1984 a young dancer from Atlanta, I had been dancing at the Atlanta Dance Center under Maria Guest, another Jones-Haywood Alumni. Ms Guest sent me to 1200 Delafield Place with Ms Jones and the rest is history. I went on to dance under Sandra Fortune-Green, Lynn Welters, Peter Romero, Fabian Barnes, Carol Foster and so many more. The training I received has allowed me to found my own company, #BTATJ Dance and Fitness Studio. Jones-Haywood is the corner stone of DC dance!!!

Many years ago, I taught classes for Houston Ballet. That's where I met Adrian Vincent James, who was the FIRST black dancer hired by the company. His early training at the Jones-Haywood Dance School, helped to give him the technique, self-esteem, and strength to make a difference in the world of dance. After obtaining a degree from Howard University, Mr. James has utilized his early training, and become an icon in the black dance community, as his documentary film, DC Gypsy will show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIl_X76_UoQ). The Haywood Dance School is a long-standing, viable dance institution; most worthy of funding.

J-H instilled in me the strength, discipline and ability to compartmentalize and appreciate both sides of the brain. I studied there for ten years, danced with the Capitol Ballet company with my lifelong friend, Sandra Fortune Green, and support her and the school today in fellowship with an alumni group of those with whom I studied and performed. We work to ensure the quality of training and love of the dance arts and music are preserved to nourish responsible and successful human beings. Without J-H, I would not have become an accomplished former diplomat, Assistant Secretary of Commerce, corporate executive, member of non profit boards and partner in a consulting firm.

My daughter attended the Jones-Haywood Dance School and the experience has given her so many tools for life beyond the dance technique. Ms. Fortune-Green provides the girls with poise, self-confidence, and an understanding of the world around them. These lessons, along with those she gets from home, will be invaluable to her in whatever field of endeavor she pursues. This historic school is a true treasure to Washington DC!

As a Parent of a child who began her training at age 5 and transitioned to the Pre-Professional Program, I am beyond appreciative of the work ethic, integrity, and discipline instilled in my child. From the moment she enters the building transitions to the studio and exits the building she is held accountable and responsible for her actions and productivity. It is the JH legacy that requires the standard is never sub-par or mediocre, but rather excellence.

My family has had 4 generations dance with Jones-Haywood My mother started dance when Ms Jones was the teacher and Ms Haywood was a student. This school has instilled so many values in our family from discipline, positive character, determination to do the best one can. After the death of Ms Jones. Ms Sandra Fortune-Green carried on the same values. My daughter has been with JH since she was 7 yrs old is now a senior in the Fordham/Ailey BFA Program. After graduation she hopes to get into a company and Live the Dream she had since the age of 6. I am so grateful to all the teachers who trained my daughter which instilled in her to succeed. Jones-Haywood will FOREVER be a part of me and for all it has done I say Thank You

Our experience at Jones Haywood Dance School has been an extraordinary journey. The school not only teaches the beautiful art of dance but also offers students a rites of passage of "how to be". Students learn through the direction of Sandra Fortune-Greene, how to be focused, educated, precise, well-rounded dancers. As a bonus, each dancer has an opportunity to learn respect, social graces, and how to become strong advocates for themselves.
My daughter (age 13) is in the pre-professional program at the school and has been a student at Jones Haywood Dance School for 3 years. She loves dance and I love that she is learning it from a professional. The classes are challenging at this level but...so is life.
My daughter has been exposed to many experienced choreographers in the industry and with each experience she is challenged.
I highly recommend the school to any student looking to grow and be challenged in the areas of ballet, modern, jazz, and tap.

I was referred to Jones Haywood Dance School about four years ago. We have stayed at JH because it is a great place for an all-around dance education.
