Mission: Educate individuals about unique art form of print making
Programs: Zygote press is an artist-run, fine art print shop founded in1996. Zygotes 6,500-sq. Ft facilities include intaglio, lithography, relief, screen printing, letterpress equipment and a digital lab for users. Zygote offers individual studio/locker spaces, exhibition in our gallery, a traveling print archive, instruction and an international residency exchange. Zygote is the only open access print studio in northeast ohio and the largest in the state. Zygote contributes to the revitalization of a burgeoning cultural district in cleveland called the arts quarter. Zygote is committed to providing program-driven resources for emerging and established artists to continue making work, exhibit, and earn income through sales and teaching opportunities. Our primary activities are to initiate and facilitate projects with professional artists to create active lab environments where artists, students and the public interact. International exchange program (sponsored by the ohio arts council) with artists from dresden germany. Expanded the press-on-wheels program and conducted over 40 tours and demonstrations. -in fall of 2011, zygote launched a new program, titled "zpass". This exciting new program consists of several uses for a multi-functioning artist-studio space. All of these uses help strengthen cleveland's visual arts community while allowing zygote press to continue its work growing cleveland's national/international reputation as an important arts region. In late december of 2013, zygote expanded and purchased a vacant house in north collinwood that is part of the redevelopment district of waterloo. This ink house will be used for editing both fine art printing and collaborations with area merchants and businesses. A print garage will be a community engagement connection with plein air printing and a home for our press-on-wheels fleet of educational printing presses that are used to demonstrate/teach printmaking techniques at schools and community festivals. In 2015, zygote eliminated the chemicals and processes in our shop that were toxic and retooled the shop with greener and environmentally friendly approaches. This campaign is called zygote operation green.
