I signed up my 11-year-old son for the filmmaking classes YIAF offered through our city's Park & Recreation Center summer camps. What a find! He absolutely loved the experience and signed up for the next camp offered later that same summer, along with his little sister. Fast forward to New Years Eve, when the film he wrote and helped film and direct won FIRST PLACE at the "First Night's Festival" in Escondido. They are now 22 and 20 years old, and continue to work with Ms. Shaw on new projects, as well as mentor new youth who are just as interested in the filmmaking experience. I have never met a more balanced, thoughtful, and enjoyable educator in all my years of watching my kids learn in all kinds of educational experiences, and boy, did I let them try a LOT of things along the way. But, YIAF continues to be their fondest and most rewarding experience, that not only inspired their creativity, but opened them up to a world I could not even imagine.
