Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Performing Arts Centers, Singing & Choral Groups, Theater

Mission: The Poinsettia Center for the Arts (DBA Star Theatre Company) is working to create a self-sustaining community center for the performing arts in North County San Diego. Our mission is to provide a quality education in the performing arts to children and adults, ages 6 – 99+, and to offer quality live community theatre and performing opportunities to the residents of San Diego County. This non-profit organization provides both children and adults a safe, creative environment for artistic expression. Under the guidance of experienced performing arts professionals, actors gain knowledge, confidence, and skills they will use the rest of their lives. We also provide a performance space for many local theatre groups, schools, and musical groups in San Diego County. Through our youth programs, we emphasize discovering talents and building self-confidence that carries over into all areas of life. Every child who auditions for one of our youth productions gets a part in our show and no one is turned away for financial reasons. We continue to develop talent as our younger performers mature into young adults. We offer additional education opportunities through workshops to develop and hone specific skills – dancing, acting, improv, stage craft, and performance. We also provide an opportunity for adults to perform in both musicals and smaller ensemble shows.

Results: • Our performers primarily come from all over San Diego County including Camp Pendleton Marine Base, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Encinitas, Chula Vista, DelMar, and MiraMesa. • We serve approximately 26,000/year of San Diegans in four groups: 1. Performers from age 6 – adult (approximately 600/year). 2. Students who enroll in our voice, dance, and drama workshops and academy programs. (Approximately 250/year). 3. Schools and other groups who rent our venue for their own productions. 4. Patrons who come to our performances.

Target demographics: to patrons of all ages

Direct beneficiaries per year: Last year we provided educational theatre opportunities to over 100 kids aged 7-18 as we continued to thrive without in-audience programming.

Geographic areas served: bringing the love of live theatre

Programs: by providing performance and educational theatre opportunities to our community.

As a volunteer costumer I can say that The Star is an icon in our community where all are included and encouraged to participate. The actors are truly engaged in an amazing experience as they learn the script and songs in the various plays. You won't want to miss the upcoming Anything Goes, it will be a fantastic treat for all.

There are no words for what Star has done for me, they got me back onstage after 30 years! My first show was Sweeney Todd, far from an easy show to perform, and our cast turned out an AMAZING show! I have since gone on to work with the company in volunteer opportunities and they make me feel like family. I am so blessed to have such an incredible community theatre in my own backyard!

The Star theater has been such an amazing experience for my daughter, she was hooked from the moment she walked on the stage. The people at the Star are patient and kind beyond words. They have the ability to make each child truly feel like an important part of the production no matter how small the part. I can’t express how thankful we are for irreplaceable memories and friends we have made at this amazing theater. As a military family we don’t get to stay in one place for too long, the Star will be remembered as the highlight of our time in California.

The Star Theatre became our family’s second home for 7 years. My oldest was energized the moment she stepped onto a stage, so she would try to participate in at least one Star production a year ... but for 7 years our family would do Annie. Our school would have recitals and string concerts there, thus cementing the Star as our home away from home.

The Star Theatre brought out the best in everyone, skills were developed, friendships were started, memories were made.

Every community needs a place like the Star Theatre to call your home away from home.

We found The Star Theater almost 7 years ago, right after our move to California. My daughter auditioned for a role in the annual production of Annie and we've been active there ever since! She has participated in their Star Kids and Glee Clubs as well as shows every year since. We love the high quality productions and the wonderful people at The Star.

I saw Sweeney Todd at this theatre sometime in 2019 - the production was phenomenal. So much talent on one stage. Also, the staff was very friendly. You can tell that the production crew worked tirelessly to bring the show to life. Overall, a wonderful theatre.

Day and night, the Star Theater in Oceanside is a pillar of the community in North San Diego County. They teach kids to sing, dance, and act in day camps - which they're still doing today, with masks and distancing - and they have nighttime adult acting classes, too. They share their venue with the community, for church services and conventions. They even open the theater to other "competing" performing arts groups that can't afford a theater of their own.

My son has been acting in the plays the Star theatre has for many years and we love it. He has grown so much at the Star and he created friendships and bonds he never would have without this theatre. The teachers there have given him a chance to be who he is and have helped him grow and develop his live of live theatre. It has become a second home for our entire family. We love the people, the community and the shows the put on.

May 25th 2010, exactly 10 years, 4 months and 11 days ago. That is the day I first auditioned for a show at the Star Theatre Company in Oceanside!!! Before I came to the Star, I was a 22 year old struggling young actor who tried so desperately to get into a show only to be turned down almost every time. I was even told by some of my teachers at Mira Costa that I was missing a few things in order to make it as a performer. It was that very moment where I thought I needed to go somewhere where no one knows me and knew that I was very inexperienced.

My very first show at the Star was All Shook Up, an Elvis Presley jukebox musical which is also based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. I was cast as one of the leads in that show and David Schulz, the director, knew how to work with someone of my inexperience. I was very happy with the way that show worked out and was a major confidence builder in my theatre experience.

Since All Shook Up, I have been pretty much in every place in a Star Theatre production from ensemble, to small feature characters to strong supporting characters to prove that I was a valuable asset to their productions. I was never once was bored, frustrated several times but never bored.

David Schulz, the artistic director of the Star Theatre Company, has an incredible imagination for theatre and performing. Learning from his mom, Ann Schulz, who was artistic director before him, he has built up a reputation as being a leader by nature and by example. With him , I and many others have learned how to do the show with intention, how to work with clarity, how to treat people with respect. HE IS INFURIATINGLY GOOD AT HIS JOB!!!

Overall, the Star Theatre Company is a phenomenal place to do theatre and during this extended intermission, they are currently offering acting, music and dance classes for both kids and adults . I guarantee that when this pandemic is over, anyone who feels like they’re struggling to fit in somewhere or looking for add more to their resume and new tricks in their arsenal, the Star Theatre Company is definitely the answer!!! As David Schulz would say, “Let It Fly and Theatre Inspires!!!”

We are grateful that we found the Star Theater years ago! My two daughters have been in different productions at the Star Theater (Annie, Wizard of Oz, Seussical summer camp, Triple Threat Workshop, etc) and each show has been a magical experience for us!
It’s a safe place for kids to do acting, singing and dancing, and everybody works hard to create a special production/performance! If you love theater, I encourage you to come and see the shows! There are different and amazing performances for everybody (for kids and adults) through out the year.
We can’t thank the Star Theater enough and we love to be part of the Star Theater family!

The Star truly does shine its light around Oceanside and North County. The staff and production teams provide a positive, supportive environment for all ages and experience levels while giving high quality entertainment to the community. I grew up performing in several theatres in Ohio, and had a tight knit theatre family. Moving to San Diego six years ago, I never thought I could reestablish that sense of community and friendship in another theatre. But I have found that at the Star Theatre, and am so grateful for the opportunities they've provided me, and the friendships I've developed at this wonderful organization.

Star Theatre Company maybe a community nonprofit theatre, but the quality shows that the theatre puts out surpasses a lot of theater's out there. Star not only pays attention to detail but also really hones in on finding the best person suited for a particular role during auditions. That in itself makes the Star Theatre Co. shows top notch. I have seen some of these kids and adults start doing theatre and have watched them bloom and grow through the show. The staff makes everyone feel welcomed like family. On top of that the Star Theatre Co. reaches out to help other nonprofits by holding food/supply drives. I have seen a lot of theatres but never one quite like this.

My daughter has participated in 2 Star theatre productions so far. It is very well run and organized, and the shows they have put up are professionally done. The kids have a great time while learning and are welcoming and kind to each other. David, Sandra, April, Katie and the entire crew at Star theatre do a great job putting on quality productions in Oceanside.

The Star Theatre is community theatre at it's finest and is a true family. I have been part of the star family for probably three years now and have enjoyed youth and adult productions alike. I say I am part of the family, and not just the audience, as that's what it feels like to be a regular at this theatre. Star does a fantastic job with it's performances and I am so happy to have made the discovery and added The Star experience to my life. They are truly developing stars on their stage and it's a great experience to see people living their dream and using their talents to bless the community.

The Star Theatre Company is a crown jewel in San Diego’s North County Arts Community.
It promotes community theatre in the truest sense of the word. There is brilliant talent on stage with an army of creative support and offstage help to produce top-quality entertainment. Recent productions of WEST SIDE STORY and THE ADDAMS FAMILY are examples of high production value and well organized use of local talent.
Bravo, Star Theatre Company!

The Star Theatre is an extraordinary non-profit that truly merits generous support from our community.
The youth theater program, in particular, is a unique treasure. It attracts extremely talented actors who are among the best performers in the county. The shows are always of the highest quality, consistently surpassing our high expectations.
Just as importantly, and unlike nearly every other high quality theater program, the Star Theare distinguishes itself by ensuring that EVERY young person who auditions is offered a role, regardless of their financial situation, experience, or disabilities.
By contributing to this nonprofit, we can help the Star continue to provide scholarships so that no child is denied the opportunity to perform. Several of the most talented actors would not have had this opportunity to learn and perform without the generous scholarships.
The expert directors David Schultz & Sandra Kopitzky bring out very best in their performers using positive affirmation, encouragement, and humor. In doing so, they build confidence and tremendous skills in their actors.
On a personal level, I am deeply grateful to the Star Theatre for the impact it has had on my son Ben. His self-esteem, confidence, and happiness have soared through his experiences at the Star over the past six years and have had a profound impact on his life at school and home. Currently, he aspires to a professional career in musical theater, thanks to his experiences at the Star.
There are so few opportunities like this in our schools or community. For these reasons and more, I enthusiastically endorse this nonprofit and encourage everyone to support it, get involved, or simply come to enjoy a show.

My daughter went to an audition at Star four years ago and it has been home ever since. My daughter had been performing for a few years but Star gave her the opportunity to reach her highest potential. She is now a seasoned performer and continually gets offered lead roles. Without David Schultz and Sandra Kopitzke our lives would not be the same.
Last year I became homeless and the my car caught on fire, all this as my daughter was in their production of Children of Eden. When they heard of our struggles they not only offered some financial relief, they sought out places for us to live and a new vehicle for us to use.
I owe so much to Star Theatre. What they do goes beyond theatre, they have built a loving community. They are so deserving of this award .
