Through these exhibitions and innovative educational programming, the wchof hopes to popularize chess among a new and diverse audience. The wchof also seeks to serve as a repository for artifacts related to the rich history of the game of chess. Designing chessmen: a taste of the imagery of chess - september 29, 2016 - march 12, 2017in 1944, the imagery of chess opened at the julien levy gallery in new york city. Conceived by the dadaist and chess master marcel duchamp, gallery owner levy, and dadaist/surrealist max ernst, the exhibition brought together a group of artists who were challenged with designing chessmen that differed from the traditional and formal staunton and "french" sets used in everyday chess and tournament play. Animal, vegetable, mineral: natural splendors from the chess collection of dr. George & vivian dean - september 29, 2016 - march 12, 2017 this exhibition of works from the dean collection marks the wchof's fifth anniversary as well as dr. George and vivian dean's 55th year of collecting fine chess sets. Lovers of history and art, the deans have traveled to over 100 countries to find over 1,000 of the finest chess sets from the 8th century ce to the present, and have assembled them into one of the world's most distinguished private collections. By exhibiting chess sets (arts) in the context of the natural materials (sciences) from which they were made along with examples of the types of tools and processes used to make them (crafts) it becomes evident that chess sets and chess culture are not apart from life, but a part of life and the natural world that surrounds us. Victor vasarely: calculated compositions - october 6, 2017 - march 25, 2018over the span of six decades, victor vasarely, the father of the op art movement, experimented with the rhythm of colors, shapes, lines, and dimensions as he composed representations of optical illusions. Though it is not discussed whether he was a chess player, vasarely began incorporating chess imageryboards, crowns, and piecesinto the chess-related artworks. Pinned! While it is estimated that there are over 600 million active chess players in the world and the number of rated players continues to grow, chess is one of the only sports without a formal uniform. With the announcement of the saint louis fashion incubator in 2016, the world chess hall of fame sought out a partnership to create a first-of- its-kind designer chess challenge wherein emerging designers created an ensemble for today's chess player, one practical piece to be worn by a player and a second avant-garde piece inspired by the game. Global moves: americans in chess olympiads november 10, 2017 - march 31, 2018inspired by the american team's victory in the 2016 chess olympiad, global moves: americans in chess olympiads examines the competition through just one of the many lenses we could use to explore its long and storied historythe experiences of american players. The exhibit includes furniture from the 1966 havana, cuba, chess olympiad, restoring a beautiful piece of chess history. Off view since the wchof relocated to saint louis from miami, we are proud to present it along with a video from the 1966 olympiad, showing tables from the tournament in use. Global moves also includes a video produced for the exhibition featuring interviews with the american team from the 2016 olympiad and several commentators who have participated in chess olympiads or women's chess olympiads themselves.

Cultural education outreach:education and adult programming: in keeping with its mission of interpreting the game of chess and its continuing cultural and artistic significance, the world chess hall of fame offered low-cost educational programming for youth and families. These include family days which seek to introduce families with children to our exhibition and a related art project. In the evening, the organization held over fourty adult programming events with visiting artists, scholars, curators, and chess professionals.
