Designing chessmen: a taste of the imagery of chess - september 29, 2016 - march 12, 2017in 1944, the imagery of chess opened at the julien levy gallery in new york city. Conceived by the dadaist and chess master marcel duchamp, gallery owner levy, and dadaist/surrealist max ernst, the exhibition brought together a group of artists who were challenged with designing chessmen that differed from the traditional and formal staunton and "french" sets used in everyday chess and tournament play. George and vivian dean's 55th year of collecting fine chess sets. Lovers of history and art, the deans have traveled to over 100 countries to find over 1,000 of the finest chess sets from the 8th century ce to the present, and have assembled them into one of the world's most distinguished private collections. Off view since the wchof relocated to saint louis from miami, we are proud to present it along with a video from the 1966 olympiad, showing tables from the tournament in use. Global moves also includes a video produced for the exhibition featuring interviews with the american team from the 2016 olympiad and several commentators who have participated in chess olympiads or women's chess olympiads themselves.

Cultural education outreach:education and adult programming: in keeping with its mission of interpreting the game of chess and its continuing cultural and artistic significance, the world chess hall of fame offered low-cost educational programming for youth and families. These include family days which seek to introduce families with children to our exhibition and a related art project. In the evening, the organization held over fourty adult programming events with visiting artists, scholars, curators, and chess professionals.
