Mission: Mercury House is guided by a dedication to literary values, to works of social significance, and to the free exchange of ideas. Yet its primary goal is more specific: Mercury House promotes authors overlooked by the increasingly commercial publishing industry. Its publishing program serves the rich literary traditions of the San Francisco Bay Area, of the West Coast, and of world authors whose books are influential and important but do not sell in high quantities. It serves a crucial cultural and political function, filling the gap left by small independent presses that have either gone out of business or been absorbed by larger publishing firms.
Programs: Mercury House publishes approximately seven books a year. We produce two semi-annual catalogues
promoting each new book season, Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. In 2001 we will launch a
newsletter as well, which will offer updates on our latest book reviews and other literary successes. We hope to establish in addition an annual holiday celebration as a means by which to honor our supporters.
For each book publication we arrange numerous local book readings in support of the new title. When possible authors tour their book throughout the United States, but often our distance covered is limited to the travel authors are able to provide on their own.
Each member of our three-person staff wears many hats, working as efficiently and cost-effectively as we can in the changing economic environment that is contemporary San Francisco. Since 1992 we have run a successful volunteer internship program whereby we supplement our small staff with additional labor while offering valuable work experience to the college graduate. Nearly 100 former interns have gone on to great successes since working with us.
