The Wild Horse Sanctuary is one of my favorite places to be. The care of the horses and burros and the maintenance of the land is foremost in the decision making process from the sanctuary leadership. It is obvious from those that oversee the day to day care and those on the governing end. that decisions are made only after careful consideration of how monies are to be used. Nothing is ever wasted. I love volunteering with this organization and will continue to donate my time and finances to help in the care of these amazing creatures. The Wild Horse Sanctuary is just that, a sanctuary not only for the animals but for anyone who comes to visit!
There is a special place in the rugged hills of Northern California where wild horses and burros live a life of freedom. This is the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown, California. The horses and burros are free to roam, socialize with each other, and they no longer live with abuse, neglect or fear. They are free to be wild. For them, this is the land of plenty. The wonderful people who live, work and volunteer at the Sanctuary are exceptional stewards of the land, and are dedicated to providing the horses and burros with loving care. I live in Oregon but am fortunate to be able to visit friends in California several times per year. While there, I have been able to help out at the Sanctuary a few times in small ways, such as feeding, cleaning, and giving medications. As a trauma survivor, being in the presence of the wild ones and experiencing their peace, has been soothing to my soul. I am so grateful for everything that the Wild Horse Sanctuary does and stands for.
Whenever I visit the Sanctuary, I leave with a sense that my life has been rebalanced. The tranquility and the beautiful terrain, along with the happy healthy mustangs living their best life, refresh my soul.
The dedication, work, and history of the Wild Horse Sanctuary has captured my soul since my first visit 25 years ago. From the trek on horseback (!) across the undulating, open meadows, while the founder describes the behavior we see as we come upon bands of wild horses, to the dedicated volunteers at camp who take care of the saddle horses, take care of the guests, and make wonderful dinners and breakfasts, it's an unmatched volunteer-supported, well organized nonprofit doing extremely important work. It provides a most unique, unforgettable experience, made possible by amazingly dedicated people.
Wild horses and burros couldn’t drive me away from such beautiful place. I’m honored to participate in the cause and share my experience with others. Bravo to the organization.
The Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary is amazing! Such a beautiful place. The animals are so well taken care of and the staff is so knowledgeable and friendly. Every time I visit the Sanctuary I leave feeling refreshed and content. Keep up the amazing work!!

Thank you, Kim!
From my first visit, I was hooked. I discovered the Wild horse Sanctuary in the early 2000’s and have been a supporter and volunteer ever since. Their mission is to protect and preserve America's wild horses as a living national treasure by providing range sanctuary in an ecologically balanced environment open to the public. The founder and all-volunteer board truly live by this mission, providing a beautiful open range for the hundreds of wild horses that live out their life at the Wild Horse Sanctuary. They go above and beyond to not only provide a safe and natural environment for these beautiful creatures, but for the native wildlife that are losing habitat from urban sprawl and wildfires.
A visit to the WHS is a therapeutic treat. I have volunteered and been on many rides over the years, and I am always impressed with the passionate volunteers and care of the sanctuary and horses.
I am confident that my donations are used to provide a natural and sustainable environment for the horses that call this place home.

Thank you, Kim!
I didn't know California had wild horses and burros until I was well into adulthood. I always thought they were only in places like Montana, Nevada or Wyoming. I've since learned so much about these wonderful animals, their intelligence, and even their vulnerability. The Wild Horse Sanctuary has provided me with the privilege of volunteering and even sponsoring a horse through their program. I share what I've learned with others since this experience has changed the way I view wild animals and our responsibility to them.

Thank you, Katie!
At The Wild Horse Sanctuary we provide a natural habitat for wild horses from all parts of the country, it does not matter how old you are, any horse or burro is welcome. We provide wild horse walks to educate the public. A beautiful place only 30 minutes from Mt. Lassen.
The Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary is one of my favorite places, it's a place that one can put the stresses of life on pause and reconnect with self and nature. Seeing the wild horses and burros in an environment natural for them and to have the ability to roam over several thousand acres is how it was intended.
I came to know the Wild Horse Sanctuary as a guest on a 2-day trail ride and came back to volunteer over and over again. I now have the honor to serve on the Board of Directors and look to keep our mission to protect and preserve America's wild horses as a living national treasure by providing range sanctuary in an ecologically balanced environment open to the public.
I started volunteering at the Wild Horse Sanctuary in 2007. I was so impressed with the commitment of the founders, board members, and other volunteers to ensuring wild horses and burros have a safe home to live as nature intended, I have committed a great deal of my life since then to ensuring the mission of the Sanctuary is carried out forever! The Sanctuary is unique - first wild horse sanctuary in the U.S., we welcome visitors from across the nation and the world for tours and trail rides, encourage volunteerism and internships, offer education for the public, and host horse gentling clinics and and opportunities for mental health professionals to learn from our wild ones. I cannot say enough good things about this amazing organization and those who help (through donations, visitation, and volunteerism)!
Though I'm not really a horse person, my sister is, I've had a great time touring the property and seeing the horses and burros in their "forever home". Driving through Nevada and seeing wild mustangs under the trees and up the sides of the hills above the freeway was such a calming and nostalgic feeling - that "this this is way things are supposed to be". I'm more than disappointed with the way our government has "managed" wild mustangs. I want to thank all of the employees, volunteers and interns at the Sanctuary for providing a place that protects and allows these beautiful animals to live their lives in nature. I don't donate to many charities, but I do to this one.

Thanks so much, Nick!
Volunteering at the Wild Horse Sanctuary has been like a dream come true for me! As a volunteer, I’ve had the opportunity to see first hand what dedicated and responsible care is given to these majestic animals! I have helped with a variety of different chores that are necessary to keep this amazing place running smoothly. This non-profit sanctuary is dedicated to the protection and preservation of America’s wild horses. It provides a safe, natural, free-roaming life for the beautiful wild horses and burros that are lucky enough to call this place home!
As a volunteer, I’ve been able to help with feeding hay to the 200 plus wild horses and burros, give Wild Horse Walk Tours to visitors, scoop manure, assist a bit with the gentling process of some of our younger adoptable horses. I’ve even been able to assist our vet and his team during some of the castrations as this sanctuary is being proactive in pursuing ways to limit the number of foals born each year.
I can’t say enough good things about the Wild Horse Sanctuary! A huge thank you to Dianne Nelson the co-founder of this wonderful place, Liz Juenke the operations manager of the sanctuary, Rob the ranch hand and all the other hard-working board members who help to run and support this wonderful sanctuary! I invite you to consider making a donation to help feed and care for these beautiful creatures or sponsor a certain horse at our sanctuary. We’d love to have you schedule a visit to the Wild Horse sanctuary or possibly even consider becoming a volunteer. Thank you for helping to make a difference in the lives of these wild horses.
