Mission: White columns identifies significant emerging and under-represented visual artists and encourages their creative and professional development through the presentation of group and solo exhibitions, an online curated artists registry, and other public programs that increase dialogue between artists, between generations of artists, and between artists and the general public.
Programs: General exhibitions: white columns' thematic exhibitions showcase work by a wide range of emerging artists, exploring important new trends and directions in contemporary art. Thematic exhibitions are organized by white columns' chief curator, as well as by emerging curators. 12 separate exhibitions and projects (outside the white room series) were presented and the works of over 100 artists were featured. White rooms: a cornerstone of white columns' exhibition schedule, the white rooms series gives solo exhibitions to emerging artists who are unaffiliated with a new york city gallery. The series provides artists with a strong body of work an invaluable opportunity to exhibit, free from the pressures of the commercial market. This program has given two artists for every exhibition 'cycle' a chance to present solo projects alongside the main space. Curated artists registry: white columns maintains a navigable database presenting new work by over 450 emerging artists. Averaging 26,660 hits per month, the registry is accessible online and is a widely recognized resource for finding new work, utilized by independent curators, gallerists, museum curators, collectors, and others. The artists are selected through an annual review process by the director/chief curator and deputy director/curator, and each year the gallery receives over 1,000 submissions. Further expanding our reach, white columns' pioneering online curated artist registry is a user-friendly platform and a resource for both participating artists and audiences alike. White columns formally re-launched the site in summer 2016; and receives requests for information about the registry daily (the only criteria for submission and inclusion is that the artist does not have commercial gallery representation in new york city). White columns also recently launched a new and ongoing series of online exhibitions, working with guest curators that are drawn exclusively from the registry. The exhibitions can be viewed online, drawing greater attention to both the registry itself and the work of the 450+ artists currently featured there. Each online exhibition is accompanied by a text where the curator discusses the title, theme, and relationship of the chosen works.
