I am a Westbury resident and gardener at the Westbury Community Garden. Westbury Community Garden is a project of the WAIC. Having a nearby urban greenspace dedicated to the education and practice of sustainable food production is a wonderful addition to our neighborhood. I am thankful for all the help we receive from the Westbury Area Improvement Corp.
As a new member of the WAIC Board, I am very excited about the work of this organization in our community. They have long been active in the Westbury area, promoting development and acting as a link to the greater Houston area. I also volunteer as president of the Westbury Community Garden, which operates under the umbrella of the WAIC, and have been pleased with how the WAIC has assisted us in our efforts to purchase the site of the garden, among other things. They have set up a separate account to accept donations, charge us no administrative fees, and act as a link to other organizations and businesses in our area who are willing to help out.
I have been a Board member of Westbury Area Improvement Corporation (WAIC) for two years and serve as a representative of Westbury Little League and also on the Friends of Westbury Greenspaces Committee. WAIC is a non-profit all volunteer organization that serves as a vehicle to get input from the local residents and businesses on what is happening and what can be done to improve our community. WAIC helps provide the knowledge, connections, and infrastructure needed to make community improvement projects successful. For example, it has been of great assistance to me in increasing awareness of all the good things going on with families at Westbury Little League and promoting a capital fund raising campaign to upgrade the facilities at the ballpark. Additionally, our Friends of Westbury Greenspaces Committee has just completed fundraising for a new playground at Westbury Park and the staging of a grand opening once construction was done. Since WAIC is a 501(c) (3) the fundraising was facilitated through this organization and the Houston Parks Board. WAIC volunteers provided ideas, guidance, and effort to make this a successful project. WAIC is a valuable asset for our community and I thank the founders and members who work to make Westbury a better place.
