I am an automation engineer who moved to Houston from Monterrey, Mexico, in September, after marrying my then-girlfriend, Erika, in July. I currently volunteer at Medical Bridges as a Sort Room Volunteer.
I found out about Medical Bridges thanks to my career coach, who set objectives for me, including volunteer work. I came across Medical Bridges online in August and have volunteered twice a week since then.
In looking for volunteer opportunities in Houston, I wanted to open the door for employment opportunities in the medical industry and thought it would be a good idea to volunteer in a medical-related organization, to expand my network of contacts.
Whether it's just a regular day, sorting new, incoming boxes or whether it's sorting a big pile of orthopedic devices, or even sorting the full bins with many different items, I like those challenges. They take my mind of the challenges of job hunting, while helping me achieve that same goal.
Beyond sorting medical supplies, I also lent my process document skills and designed a sorting instruction guide that will eventually be used in the Sort Room as a tool for new volunteers. The way I see it, it will help things go faster. That's what I do, professionally, as an automation engineer.
This world needs more people willing to volunteer. There are just not enough hands to help those in need. Just a couple of hours a week can make a big impact in your life, as well as many others.

I have served on many nonprofit boards, but Medical Bridges has one of the most committed boards that I have encountered with time, talent and financial contributions. Aligned with the dedicated staff and volunteers, everyone works to obtain donated quality medical supplies and equipment and send them to requesting nonprofit health providers in developing countries. The nonprofit clients of Medical Bridges select the items needed from inventory, which means they get what they want and need, and they have the comfort of knowing that Medical Bridges sends in-date supplies and working equipment with access to manuals for operation/maintenance. Unfortunately not all medical suppply recovery organizations send what the clients want and some also send broken or unusable items thus transferring medical equipment and supply waste to developing countries. Instead, Medical Bridges is committed to helping with selected medical supplies and equipment, and is committed to environmental zero waste in its repurpose and reuse. Medical Bridges actually made the critical difference in adequately equipping the newly established Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilishan-Remo, Nigeria in her efforts at raising the healthcare standards in the country and entire West African sub-region. Our non-profit, Agape In Action, Inc. has called on them numerous times to help provision medical missionary teams sent to Haiti and Guatemala. They have always provided a lot of what is needed for a nominal fee. We love to work with this organization.
