Mission: The virginia institute of autism is dedicated to helping people overcome the challenges of autism through innovative, evidence-based programs in education, outreach and adult services.
Programs: The james c. Hormel school is a year-round, day-school program serving students diagnosed with asd between the ages of 2 and 22. The james c. Hormel school provides students with a comprehensive, state-of-the art education and clinical program designed to address the core symptoms of asd and related learning issues. A multidisciplinary faculty, consisting of experts in aba, special education, and speech therapy develop individualized education programs for each student. The james c. Hormel school provides an intensive staff to student ratio. Each student receives daily one-on-one instruction from highly trained technicians, as well as regular supervision from licensed behavior analysts.
the outpatient behavioral services program delivers evidence-based therapies designed to address the continuum of needs exhibited by children and adolescents with asd. Depending upon a clients needs, aba therapy is provided in the home, community, and/or vias specialized clinic. In addition to individual therapy, the outpatient behavioral services program provides social skills training groups, summer camps, parent and caregiver coaching, and a number of workshops/continuing education events for health care practitioners, educators and child care providers.
the adult academy program is designed to provide adults with asd a variety of life-long continuing education opportunities and behavioral supports. The academy is comprised of three colleges: college of life skills, college of business, and the college of health and well-being. Adult students in the academy take a variety of courses designed to teach independent living skills, gain and maintain meaningful employment, and how to live healthy lifestyles. In addition, aba therapy is provided to address behavior challenges and provide on-going therapeutic support.
