I find International Neighbors addresses a great need for the refugees and SIVs in Charlottesville by not just supplying donated goods but also making connections within the community. Charlottesville benefits from our global community when we reach out as friends and "Great Neighbors." Getting these families engaged in community events and extracurricular activities promotes acceptance of all cultures. Personally, I have benefitted from my friendships with refugees by volunteering with International Neighbors. I come away from my visits feeling inspired.
International Neighbors is a local nonprofit that serves the refugee & special immigrant community. It works to pair native speakers with refugee families ("Family Friendships"), while also providing refugee families with necessary clothing, household items, services (transportation to/from dental & medical appointments, extracurricular activities, etc) & experiences (theatrical performances, concerts, community festivals, etc). International Neighbors has often been referred to "Big Brothers Big Sisters" for refugees. Everyone is encouraged to "be a great neighbor!"
