Causes: Arts & Culture, Performing Arts Schools
Mission: Velocity is seattle's premier art center dedicated to contemporary dance and performance. Everyday we: support and advance artists and emerging ideas through commissioning, presenting, residencies, creative exchange; and access to space, funding, scholarships, employment and touring opportunities. Provide quality movement education to dancers from beginners to professional, in a broad range of movement styles. Produce programs that introduce audiences to a wide spectrum of contemporary dance practices and aesthetics and bring together regional talent and world-class innovators. Provide outreach and humanities programs that engage minds and inspire participation, while promoting cross-disciplinary dialogue and meaningful links between artists and the community.
Programs: Studio/theater operation & on-going classes: velocity is proud to provide entry points to dance for adult beginners as well as career-furthering opportunities to professional performers and choreographers by offering a spectrum of dance classes. Annually, velociy offers an average of 1,500 classes taught by reowned local teachers. The backbone of the curriculum is contemporary dance with many additional genres taught to diversify and expand our adult student base.
strictly seattle: strictly seattle is a three-week summer dance intensive comprised mostly of seattle artists and educators. Adult-only programs are offered to the public from beginning to professional levels, with daily classes, rehearsals, and a public performance on the final weekend.
made in seattle program uniquely provides multi-dimensional direct support to artists over a period of a year or more, with particular focus on the critical development phase of new work. The made in seattle new dance development program is dedicated to growing the northwest's creative community by commissioning, producing and presenting evening-length dance works by some of the most talented and experimental artists from our region. This program fosters excellence in the seattle dance scene by supporting extended collaborative projects that bring together seattle artists and inter/national leaders in the field.
sfdi: 27,354 sfdi is a world-reowned summer dance festival focused on improvisational dance and related fields. Sfdi feature classes, intensives, jams, performances, and discussion with leading local, national and international dance innovators. Guest artist series: 14,447 - guest artist series provides the seattle community with residency activities from national/international dance artists including technique classes, workshops, and performances.
