Programs: The university of pennsylvania press, inc. (penn press) is a pennsylvania nonprofit corporation, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the university of pennsylvania. Its mission is to disseminate and publish scholarly and academic books, treatises, and other publications of serious literary, scientific or educational merit in conjunction with the university of pennsylvania. Its primary aim is to maintain a publishing program that is influential and innovative, and that addresses the needs of scholars, teachers, students, professionals, and the broader community of readers. Since its inception in 1890, penn press has published many scholarly and influential books. It still has over 4000 titles on its active back list and publishes upwards of 140 books and journal issues annually. One of the press's earliest publications, the philadelphia negro by w. E. B. Dubois, is still considered a landmark in the study of black problems and pernicious and persistent effects of racism. Books published by the penn press regularly win prizes in their fields of scholarship. Many others are successful in making the work of scholars and researchers accessible to the lay person. For the fiscal year ended june 30, 2017, the press published 137 new titles and reprinted 48 previously published titles. In addition, 905 backlist titles were newly digitized. The press serves over 1,250 customers, wholesale and retail, including college bookstores in all regions of the country. The press does not receive regular grants from any foundation. Revenues are generated from the sale of books. The university of pennsylvania provided an annual operating subvention of $384,900 and donated the use of facilities of $183,000 in the fiscal year ended june 30, 2017.
