Causes: Federated Giving Programs, Philanthropy
Mission: United way of southwest oklahoma mobilizes the communities we serve in ways no single agency, individual or government can to enhance the ability of people to care. United way of southwest oklahoma capitalizes on the abilities of hundreds of volunteers to help determine critical community needs, assess the value of programs seeking funding and determine and leverage adequate funding for those programs. We work to increase awareness and engage volunteers to raise funds to support services that address those needs. We collaborate with many organizations on community issues. We strive to build the skills of volunteers who serve as non-profit board members. Our direct programs include success by 6/smart start which serves children 0-6 and their caregivers.
Programs: Agency allocation/ fund distribution - funds from the fye 2017 campaign were distributed to 19 501(c)(3) non-profit health and human services providers and other organizations designated by donors. Programs funded through our need assessment and volunteer review process must meet stringent guidelines for outcomes, financial responsibility and volunteer board involvement. Community volunteers serve as the review panel for this process.
success by 6/smart start (grant) provides support to parents/caregivers to enable children birth-6 years old to enter school ready to succeed. Programs include but are not limited to bibs and books (mothers of newborns receive parenting information, a book and bib), raising a reader (pre-k and head start children participate in weekly exchanges of books in a take home book bag with caregivers reading over 100 titles), books and badges (books are given to local law enforcement to pass out in low income crime ridden neighborhoods), prescription for reading (area pediatrician offices provide a book to all children during their wellness exam), book swaps (sites in comanche county provide sites where children can receive an age appropriate book), and parent trainings are provided on a request and topic basis.
community impact-building the community's capacity to respond to non-profit needs both for funding and for dedicated educated volunteers and board members and the community's need for volunteers during disasters. Our community impact work includes assessing community need and educational opportunities for both agency staff and community volunteers.
