Mission: Unite-la's mission is to ensure the continuous improvement of effective and aligned cradle-to-career public education and workforce development systems in los angeles, resulting in all children and youth having access to a high-quality education.
Programs: Business education partnerships: business education partnership program partners the los angeles business community with the los angeles unified school district (lausd) to benefit local schools and students. The business education partnership team offers businesses and professionals different opportunities to engage in los angeles school. At nine career pathway high schools, business professionals participate in classroom speaking, career days, job shadowing, teacher professional development, teacher externships and offer internships to help students become aware, explore, prepare and practice different careers. Business education partnership program hosts the annual principal for a day and executive for a day: events coordinated jointly with the l. A. Chamber for 200-300 corporate and school administrators. Principal for a day provides business leaders, elected officials, and community leaders a unique hands-on experience to appreciate both the strengths and challenges of leading a public school. Business education partnership program is also playing a key role in developing the los angeles regional stem hub.
la compact: at the core of our systems change efforts, unite-la convenes the l. A. Compact, a bold commitment by 23 los angeles leaders from education, business, government, labor and nonprofit sectors to transform education outcomes from cradle to career, ensuring that today's youth have the skills necessary to compete and succeed in a 21st century global workforce. Our unique role as an intermediary allows us to build consensus between diverse stakeholders through collaborative strategies, creating more sustainable and scalable education and workforce solutions. The 23 signing partners have agreed to pursue 3 ambitious, systemic goals: 1) all students graduate from high school, 2) have access to and are prepared for success in college, and 3) have access to pathways to sustainable jobs and careers.
la youth at work: l. A. Youth at work galvanizes support from the business community for young adult employment in los angeles and prepares youth, ages 16-24 years old, for meaningful internships and work experience. L. A. Youth at work offers free job skills workshops, work readiness certification sessions and hiring events. At job skills workshops, youth learn necessary soft skills to be successful at entry-level positions. Work readiness certification sessions prepare youth for real-world hiring processes, including: submitting a resume, completing an application, and interviewing with an employer. Hiring events give participants with work readiness certificates access to approximately 2,500 job opportunities from over 50 employers.
cash for college: l. A. Cash for college is one of the region's largest college access and financial aid awareness campaigns, serving 20,000 students each year. L. A. Cash for college helps students achieve their college aspirations through a three step process: we inform students and families preparing for college about planning and application resources at the annual l. A. Cash for college convention; we assist students in completing and submitting fafsa and cal grant applications at the cash for college financial aid workshops; and, we reward students who have completed the cash for college process with an opportunity to win a college scholarship.
