Mission: Tucson's january 8th memorial foundation was established to develop a memorial to remember the tragic shooting that occurred at congresswoman gifford's "congress on your corner" event in tucson, arizona on january 8, 2011. The completed memorial will honor those who were killed or injured that day, commemorate the extraordinary community response to the tragedy, and assure that future generations understand the events that unfolded and the significant role of the democratic process that was at the heart of that day's "congress on your corner".
Programs: Developing permanent memorial: continued board planning to provide strategic and financial support for the memorial. Completed schmatic design phase for memorial. Entered into contract for design development phase of memorial. Held public meetings to get input on final design of memorial. Hired full-time executive director to facilitate fundraising and management of memorial. Archiving project: donated archival pieces to community organizations began discussions with the arizona historical society for assession of archival materials for permenant storage. State & federal support: met with both federal and state legislators to further memorial funding and planning continued to work with pima county and the city of tucson for support and integration of the memorial. Oral history: continued to work with videographer to collect interviews of those affected by the january 8th tragedy, including survivors, family members, first responders and medical personnel.
