Mission: Npcdc's missing is to initate, sponsor and operate housing and economic development projects that create economic stability and upward mobility for low-income families in metropolitan washington, dc. Since 2000 npcdc has developed 382 units of affordable rental housing in the district of columbia as well as a 56 units mixed-income condominium property in columbia heights, which includes 20,000 square feet of commercial space. Npcdc has also participated in develing homes in conjunction iwth the city sponsored program. In addition, a major focus of npcdc is to design, auppot and fund social service programs targeted at the residents of these properties and in the surrounding communities.
Programs: Social service programs: npcdc has expanded its resident services program at langston lane apartments, a section 8 community. The average age of a lingston mother is 18 and approximately 250 children line in the apartment complex. Most leaseholders are single mothers and the average annual household income in less than 10,000. Some of langston's families have lived there for three and four generations. To address our populations youth, poverty and intergenerational exposure to vilolence and trauma, out social services program focusses on helping resideents improve their life skills and find resources to increase their overall sense of security. A licensed social worker is onsite and provides case management to each langston family, helping young mothers set long and short term goals. She routinely teaches cooking, nutrition and financial management classes onsite and often arranges for outside service providers to offer classes about life training, ged study courses and homework labs. The social servise program also routinely secures low cost or free food, clothing and school supplies for donation to the residents. This program has established partnerships with more than 30 local community service agencies and businesses.
asset management and development: through its partnerships, npcdc manages and oversees the ongoing operations of 4 multifamily affordable housing developments located in ward 8 and one mixed use property located in columbia heights. As a result of npcdc's active involvment with the properties significant decreases in crime have been realized in these immediate communities. Additionally, through partnership with the apple tree institute, a charter school providing literacy and math education to three and four-year old children in the columbia heights neighborhood. Additionally, npcdc regularly links residents to rental assistance providers so that stable, safe living conditions could be maintained for those facing economic hardships.
