As a youth, I was shown to serve others to humble myself and be myself. I was giving a tour with the rest of my group of the charity and I had so many thoughts going through my head but the main thing was I felt so much joy being able to give others time, playing with the children, serving food to others and even doing some cleaning up. It changed me.It made me want to change other lifes.

I interned at SOME in the fall as the Development Intern and it has been my best internship experience of my undergraduate career. From the beginning, I noticed how close-knit and warm the other staff members were. Everyone made me feel very welcomed, being that I was studying far away from home last semester, they don't know how comforting that was to me. I often bragged about how much SOME did not only annually with events but on a day to day business with client services. I definitely fell in love with the company and the staff. They also didn't make me feel like an intern. They gave me as much of a hand in everything as regular staff members and that I will always cherish because it increased my confidence in my skills and abilities. If I never return to DC to work, I will always be a supporter of SOME and will definitely be a future donor as well!

The CCNV is a great place. It has been committed to DC's homeless for years. The DC government has failed the homeless community and CCNV has stepped up to a very difficult problem. <br> <br>Provides services. <br> <br>Revolutionized the homelessness issue in DC. <br> <br>Emergency Shelter. <br> <br>Food. <br> <br>Support.

This organization is doing an awesome job, transforming lives of those who are often forgotten about. They are some very dedicated individuals, who are making individual lives better each day at a time.

ONE DC's web site offers its own 5 year review that includes a Financial Standing report for the calendar year ending 12/31/2011. The figures show that ONE DC raised 40 to 60% LESS than budgeted in EACH of its fundraising categories. Income plummeted, program spending (and program impact?) was slashed, and still a $169,000 deficit was generated. That is more than half their annual budget., The deficit forced the group to further cut its reserve funds by $100,000. The organization's 990 reports show it has had large deficits and depletion of its assets for several years in a row now. It does not seem to be able to sustain itself and to stop bleeding cash. What does it need to change and soon to survive, let alone thrive and be the effective organizing group that DC needs?

I have been a Calvary volunteer for almost seven years and I thoroughly enjoy it! Being a part of Calvary has enriched my life immensely. It is a wonderful organization that truly invests and believes in the women they serve. If you're like me, I wanted to do something to give back, but didn't know where to begin. At Calvary, there is something for everyone to do--whether it's being a meal volunteer, overnight volunteer or teaching the residents life skills. Whatever you decide, you will be making the right choice to connect with Calvary! Your heart will be glad you did!

I've been going to Thrive DC since May 2013, and each time I am blown away by the selfless dedication the staff shows for their clients. Any questions or concerns clients have are answered immediately, and the staff treats their clients as a part of their family. Thrive DC offers a wide variety of emergency and social services for DC's homeless population, from breakfast and dinner to personal care items to referrals to legal and medical clinics. As a volunteer, there are several work options that you can do, from helping out clients in the computer lab with writing resumes or just sending an email to checking mail to organizing, scanning, and filing. The staff is small and appreciates all the help that volunteers provide. <br>As a volunteer, I helped out in the women's dinner program. Each night, there is a different activity for the women to enjoy. I've line-danced, played bingo with, talked about serious topics such as homosexuality with, and watched movies with Thrive's women clientele. The women's program runs two hours long, so there is plenty of time to get to know the women in the program. Getting to hear about their lives is the highlight of the program, because these women all have a story to tell. After the activity and talking, I served dinner to the women, who widely vary age-wise and racially. Once dinner is over, the clients and I clean the dining area. Staff members such as Trenett and Clinton are truly dedicated to this program and ensure it runs smoothly. Two to three hours in the afternoon is not a large commitment, but it hugely impacts not just the clients, but the volunteer as well. I always leave the women's program feeling that I gained more from the experience than I could have imagined, and I always come back willing to help out and do more. Thrive DC is a wonderful organization that truly cares about community in an increasingly disconnected world.

Rachael's provides hope and help to homeless women. we have a day center that provides meals, showers, laundrey facilities, counseling, training, and referral services. We have a permanent housing program with 17 units. We have a kind, caring, nurturing staff. Rachael's affects an incredible amount of people with a very small staff and limited budget.
