Causes: Public & Societal Benefit
Mission: The corporation was established to benefit the public through promoting the creation of jobs and the expansion of the tax base through northern california by assisting small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises to improve their operating efficiencies and competitiveness.
Programs: Nist mepthe corporation for manufacturing excellence (manex), a private non-profit corporation, was established in 1995 to provide services to small and mid-size manufacturers in 14 northern california counties. Manex operates as a partner with cmtc torrance via a subrecipient agreement generating 50% expense match through cmtc's five year agreement with nist mep. (starting in october 1, 2016 to current)
nist b2bmanex (northern california's mep) sfmade (a regional public-private partnership) and britehub (a private technology company) propose to implement a powerful new design-manufacturing collaboration and sourcing platform that will catalyze regional product design/innovation, connect new product demand to regional manufacturers, and provide a platform to facilitate the re-shoring of existing demand to california's manufacturers. During the two years, the solution will reach an estimated 1000 manufacturers responsible for potentially between one to five billion dollars in total revenue, employing an estimated 15,000 to 40,000 employees. Once at scale, the collaboration platform will catalyze long-term process innovation across northern california's regional manufacturing base - as domestic manufacturers gain new skills, partnerships, and capacities to respond to short, flexible production runs - and will both sustain and create new manufacturing jobs across a broad spectrum of skills and roles. Finally, the solution will also be implemented with an eye towards national replication right from the beginning, offering the potential to create a new, integrated, national design-manufacturing sourcing platform. Nist b2b expenses are refunded at 100% matching rate for the audit year to all funded sub-contract partners to manex (sf made & britehub). This program ended on march 31, 2017.
acwibacwib stands for the alameda county workforce investment board and has been a partner of manex since the nummi (toyota / gm partnership) closure and the resulting contract work in assisting the firms and employees affected by the closure. Since the nummi project manex has from time to time been tasked with layoff aversion through various assessments and scholarship projects with acwib. Client services are the actual projects delivered to the small and medium sized manufacturers in northern ca to improve their business, train their employees and become more efficient. These programs are funded by a mix of payment plans from the client, by the nist expense match via the sra agreement with cmtc torrance ca (nist mep & nist b2b), by state etp funds or by acwib if acwib has an applicable program and the client is in alameda.
