Thd has been ranked among the nation's best hospitals in digestive disorders, orthopedics, and neurology and neurosurgery. Thd activated its trauma program in november 2014, and anticipates being designated by the texas department of health as a level ii trauma center in 2016. The hospital earned magnet recognition program award for excellence in nursing services for the second time in 2011 by the american nurses credentialing center, and achieved cycle iv chest pain accreditation from the society of cardiovascular patient care. It was designated a bariatric surgery center of excellence by the american society for metabolic and bariatric surgery, and a center of excellence for gynecological surgery by the american institute of minimally invasive surgery. The thd hyperbaric medicine unit earned accreditation with distinction from the undersea and hyperbaric medical society. More than 3,000 employees work at this hospital and more than 1,000 physicians are practicing on its medical staff. Thd had 148,218 patient days, 27,446 discharges, 5,289 births, 152,912 outpatient encounter, and 69,834 emergency room visits during the calendar year. Thd provides quality medical healthcare regardless of a patient's race, creed, sex, national origin, handicap, age or ability to pay. The hospital provides care to persons covered by governmental programs including medicare and medicaid for reimbursement that does not always cover the cost of providing the care. Recognizing its mission to the community, services are provided to both financially indigent and medically indigent patients. To the extent reimbursement for services is below cost, thd recognizes the difference as charity care.
