Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Deaf & Hearing Impaired Centers, Disabilities, Ear & Throat Diseases, Education, Health, Human Services

Mission: Texas Hands & Voices (TX H&V) offers support, information and resources in an unbiased manner to families with children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Our outreach activities, parent/professional/community collaboration, and advocacy efforts are focused on enabling Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children to reach their highest potential.

Results: Our Guide By Your Side program offers direct Parent to Parent support and direct support from Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults to parents. Webinars for families and professionals on the importance of family involvement in the education of a Deaf/HH child's life. Monthly FB chat with topics affecting our families and a FB page dedicated to the Hispanic families of Texas. Parent support events across Texas. Co-host Family Weekend Retreat with ERCOD and TSBVI Partnering with DSHS TEHDI program to reduce loss to follow up rates in the state. Initial ASTra training to 55 Level 1 attendees

Target demographics: families of children birth to 21 who are deaf or hard of hearing

Direct beneficiaries per year: (FY 16-17) 99 families matched with Guides through our GBYS program and hosted over 20 family events in seven geographic areas with a total of over 660 attendees and reached over 1200 families and professionals in our eNews contact database. Our FTGs have reached 2000 families to assist with reaching the "next steps" in their child's hearing screening.

Geographic areas served: Texas

Programs: We offer unbiased support to families through networking, resource sharing, a website & Facebook page, parent & professional trainings, newsletters, social events and workshops. Our parent to parent support program Guide By Your Side TM, matches specially trained “Guides” to work directly with families in need of the unique support that comes from someone else who has walked the path him/herself and can share from direct experience and wisdom. Enrolling in the Guide By Your Side TM program is easy, confidential and free of charge. Additionally our Follow Through Guide program works to support families who have recently been referred for additional hearing screening through direct parent to parent contact. Our new ASTra program offers trainings on D/HH issues in educational advocacy in the Hands & Voices context: a commitment to unbiased support of families regardless of language and communication approaches used by their children and across the full continuum of educational placement options, so that every child who is D/HH has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. ASTra content is derived from years of direct advocacy experience working with families in schools, attending advocacy trainings from legal experts, providing trainings, and the Hands & Voices Educational Advocacy Guidebook. Fall of 2017 we will begin matching families with ASTra Advocates to help with advocacy resources, support, and in some cases, attend an IEP meeting with the family.

This is an awesome organization that support parents of deaf/hard of hearing children. They provide resources and support that parents wouldn't have gotten if this organization didn't exist. There is a huge need for this in our state and we are so blessed to have these people who work hard to support these parents!

Texas Hands & Voices has changed our lives. When my son was diagnosed with hearing loss at age 4, we had no idea what to do or who to turn to. With the help of Hands & Voices and their Guide By Your Side program, we were able to connect with other families in our situation, and get all the information we needed. Since then, we have become more involved, and I have moved on to serve on the board of the organization. Texas Hands & Voices is there for families of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, and I'm proud to be a small part of that.

I have been a recipient of Texas Hands & Voices services in the past and am now honored to be working for them and to serve as part of the board. This organization truly cares about the families it supports and works hard to connect parents of deaf/hh kids to the multitude of resources available to help their children succeed - and all without an agenda toward which options any family should choose. "What works for your child is what makes the choice right!" It is a perfect blend of direct parent support with input from professionals and from D/HH adults available as well!

We moved to the Dallas area about 4 years ago from another state that had a Hands & Voices organization so I kind of new about them and how they could help my daughter and our family. When we got settled in Texas and finally got in contact with Texas Hands & Voices I was so happy to hear from my guide and get connected! My guide got me plugged into the deaf community here in DFW and helped with finding new doctors and specialist for my daughter. Since we have been here we have moved forward with one cochlear implant and one hearing aide. Having someone to talk with and get information from has been so very helpful!!! I am so thankful for all their help and support in all they have done for my family!

This organization is the go-to for all unbiased information for the Deaf/HH community and parents. Its GBYS program has been invaluable to me, educating me on options for my HH daughter and connecting me with the resources. I encourage anyone who needs guidance to contact this organization, join the organization and fully support their programs. There is not another comparable and generous organization in its field!!

Both of my daughters are hearing impaired and require hearing aids. The resources and support that TH&V has provided has been beyond belief. The incredible fear and concern new parents have to endure when their child is diagnosed can be overwhelming. Having an organization like this not only removes the fear but provided confidence that we can overcome and thrive!

God Bless Texas Hands and Voices and all parents and children experiencing hearing loss.

Texas hands & voices is a dedicated organization that has touched so many lives, including mine. They've provided me with so many resources and tools to become a better advocate for my 12 year old deaf child. Not only they've empowered me, but they gave me the confidence to better assist other families that I work with.

The leaders of this organization provide such a great resource for the families of individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing. I have worked with families who have told me how much this organization has impacted the strength of their relationships between the families and their loved ones who is deaf/hard of hearing. Seeing this--is a blessing as we didn't have this during my upbringing.

EVERYONE AT TX HANDS& VOICES WORK SO HARD AT PROVIDING THE RIGHT RESOURCES AND TOOLS PARENTS NEED IN ORDER TO DO WHATS BEST FOR THEIR CHILDREN. THEY MAKE SURE THEY ARE SUPPORTIVE AND SENSITIVE TO EVERYONE'S NEEDS, IT IS A VERY REWARDING JOB WHEN YOU GET TO SEE A PARENT FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE DECISIONS BEING MADE REGARDING THEIR CHILD'S HEARING NEEDS.

Texas Hands and Voices is a great organization because of the initiatives to think outside of the box to reach families all across the state of Texas. It's not easy serving a state as big as Texas but this group is connecting with families regardless of geographic location. May TX Hands & Voices continue to find success in growth!
