Take 2 provides an intensive social skills program for children with autism spectrum disorders. For eight years it has been making a difference in the lives of children and their families through a four week summer curriculum that builds on the childrens' strengths to teach them the friendship skills that are such a challenge for them. The program also teaches strategies for managing emotions like frustration and anxiety, and provides a framework for supporting various aspects of executive function like planning and organization.
While the challenges of an autism spectrum disorder are lifelong, a month of intensive support can make a dramatic difference by clarifying a way forward. For many children, Take 2 is their first experience of social success, the first time they feel they have friends and are wanted as part of a group. For parents it's often the first time they've felt their child's strengths are truly appreciated. When children with autism spectrum disorders are better able to access the larger world, everyone benefits.
