I have been involved with Storyland Theatre as an actor for the last 11 years. Many years prior to that, I sat in the Storyland audience as a child, eager to watch the magic of theatre unfold on numerous occasions. Storyland Theatre holds a special place in my heart as it was one of the major forces in my life that made me want to be involved in the arts and be a performer. There is something truly magical about Storyland and that is so evident when you come to a performance and see the looks on the children’s faces. I’m so glad that I get to be a part of this theatre family as we influence the next generation to be lovers of the arts.
Storyland exposes thousands of kids each year to their first theatrical experience that they might not otherwise have. With entirely original productions from the script to the set, the shows are enchanting and a delight to be a part of.
We have worked with Storyland Theatre from the very beginning of their founding and the theater group has been able to bring a consistent quality program of children's entertainment to the CSRA every season. We would like to bring attention to Barbara Feldman's efforts with that group in particular, as she seems to be dedicated to the vision and determined to see it through any change or crisis without fail.
Storyland Theatre, founded in 1988, presents live theatre performed by adults for children. They mount three productions per year which are attended by thousands of children from the CSRA. A majority of these attend for reduced rates or for free. Storyland plays are frequently a child's first--and for some, a child's only--exposure to live theatre. All the plays are locally written adaptations of fairy tales. Most are musicals with original music composed by a local composer. The stories are entertaining and present a moral lesson. All performances are preceded by a talk on theatre/concert etiquette. Storyland certainly lives up to its mission to teach children a love of theatre and encourage them to attend all kinds of arts events as adults.
I have had the pleasure of performing onstage with Storyland Theatre as an actor soon-to-be thrice since the spring of 2017. Storyland Theatre is made up of a wonderful collection of caring people who strive to create the best possible experience for kids, some of whom have never before seen a live production. For some of our past actors, for example, Storyland is what allowed them to develop a love of theatre or fostered in them a desire to do theatre. That Storyland was able to inspire in them such a love of the theatrical arts is a testament to its abilities and reach. Simply by attending a show, I believe that kids can easily develop a love of the arts in general or perhaps become more appreciative of them. I have come across kids and their parents who attended the shows who come up to me and are still talking about what they've seen weeks, months, or even a year ago, detailing how much they loved it. Parents have said that it's sometimes all their child can talk about. That, to me, is such a wonderful thing to behold because it really means that it is impacting the kids (and even the parents). On the subject of parents, Storyland Theatre does a Saturday matinee which parents can attend along with their children and during which active duty military and their families are admitted for free. This shows a wonderful support for our military families and allows kids to experience the show a second time with their parents, who are also sure to enjoy the show. I should also note that working with the delightful people behind Storyland Theatre is an absolute privilege and a joy. It makes for a terrific experience, and I encourage any actors that may have the opportunity to take it. Whether as an actor, a child, a parent, or a volunteer, if anyone has the chance to work with or partner with Storyland Theatre, take that chance without a second thought.
One of the things that I find the most interesting is that some of the current adult actors with Storyland were first exposed to theater through this very organization. It is a beautiful example of the circle of life. There is nothing as remarkable as seeing a child light up with delight as they introduced to the imagination and creativity during a live play. Our community is so fortunate to Barbara Feldman and this organization to educate our children about the wonderment of theater.
We absolutely love Storyland Theatre! We have gone for years for plays at the theatre. The directors as well as all performers are truly amazing and entertaining. We love Storyland for our homeschool outings. My family had attended plays for over 20 years. Well worth the visit.
For the last ten years, I have had the opportunity to serve as a volunteer, Staff, and Board Member with Storyland Theatre Inc. I believe we have made a significant impact on the lives of kids in our Augusta community. We believe that introducing Storyland Theatre performances to the children of the Central River Site Area will teach a love of the theatre, and will encourage attendance at all kinds of arts events as adults. Our board has remained dedicated to preserving our areas performance arts community and it’s local artists. We all love being engaged in our crafts and in our community and I have love being apart of the Storyland family!
I am proud to be part of Storyland Theatre both as a Board member and actress. Storyland Theatre, under the direction of Barbara Feldman, entertains thousands of students a year while also teaching a lesson. Teachers are given lesson plans before the performances which are connected to the Georgia curriculum.
Again, I am so blessed and proud to be part of this amazing nonprofit. If you are ever in the Augusta, GA area during one of our shows come on by and check us out.
OK, I've been associated with Storyland Theatre from the beginning as writer, actor, sometime director, so one might consider my review self-serving. But. There are reasons I've stayed with the theatre for so long (none of them monetary). In addition to the obvious, the people of Storyland bring theatre to children who might otherwise never get to see it. They waive or reduce fees to those who need reduction in order to attend. They give back to the community, and they teach love, brotherhood and sisterhood. Above all, they provide consistently exciting theatre.
