Mission: STEPOLOGY was founded in response to the need for the preservation and promotion of tap dance.
Programs: STEPOLOGY's multi-faceted approach to progamming includes concert performances, lecture/demonstrations, instruction, a newsletter, a scholarship program, archival and preservation efforts, and collaboration with a wide range of dance artists and musicians in the region. Since 2003, STEPOLOGY has produced the Bay Area Tap Festival (BATF), whose mission is to act as a bridge between the traditions and new directions of tap dance in the Northern California region, and to make tap available to an underserved public through a combined workshop and performance festival format. Now produced annually, the BATF has become STEPOLOGY's most important public event, showcasing established as well as emerging artists in the field of tap. The annual Bay Area Rhythm Exchange concert performance component of the BATF continues to attract an ethnically diverse, multi-generational public, and the project audience is based predominantly in the Northern California region. While STEPOLOGY is known regionally for its unique role in preserving and promoting tap dance, the organization has gained national recognition for the fine artistic quality of its programming, and has attracted visitors from several states, as well as Canada, Mexico, and several European countries. Since 2004, STEPOLOGY's audience for the Bay Area Rhythm Exchange has experienced an average annual growth rate of 100%, and continues to climb steadily. Overall, the organization now annually serves an estimated 2500 individuals representing an ethnically diverse, multi-generational demographic.
