Mission: St. Elizabeth Catholic Worker (SECW) is a not-for-profit corporation located in an African-American community on the south side of Chicago. Our mission is to serve homeless mothers and their children by not only providing physical stability through shelter and meals but also empowering our residents through support, education, job training, skill development and affirmation. Our facilities provide a temporary home to 7 women and 28 children. We provide each family with a private room, meals, and extensive support services. In addition, we support our neighborhood through our weekly food pantry.
I visited this CW about 15 years ago as I was traveling across the US. Wonderful people, wonderful organization. The 'staff' live on site and volunteer their time. No one is paid a salary. Money you give to the CW is used to feed and shelter the poorest of poor. The house took me in for the three days I visited, no questions, just became a part of the place for my short stay. It was a memory I will always think fondly of as I look back on my life!
