Causes: Arts & Culture
Mission: The South Chicago Art Center was founded with several goals in mind: to provide a safe place for children after school; to bring arts education into local impoverished schools; to stimulate the imaginations of participants; to cultivate a sense of aesthetics; to boost self-esteem and intellectual curiosity; and to promote solidarity and empowerment in the community.
Programs: Out-of-school programs - take place at the organization's studios in south chicago. The studios are open five days a week, and programs are defined by a new and innovative approach called "skyway", which shift in perspective, away from "art education" and toward art making as an inherently educational experience. These programs also take place at facilities that are coordinated by partnering community organizations and range from one day workshops to multi-week art courses. These programs reach 2,200+ youth.
in-school arts programs - take place in the organization's network of partnering school so the chicago's south side. Programs include in-class arts integration delievered by the organization's teaching artists in partnership with classroom teachers, after-school classes, and parent/teacher workshops. All schools served have over 75% of its populations on free or subsidized lunch program. These programs reach 1500+ youth.
