Mission: Society For Helping, Inc. was established on May 25, 1977 as a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation to implement programs that enhance and enrich the lives of hearing impaired persons and mainstream them with the hearing community.
Society uses a five-prong approach to address the needs of the whole individual. The components are educational, physical, social/cultural, emotional/human services delivery and parental/community involvement.
For the inner-city deaf, especially, the problems inherent in a low socio-economic environment are compounded by low self-esteem, low aspiration and motivational levels, isolation, lack of easily accessible outlets for social, recreational and emotional needs. Lack of important wholesome interaction with hearing and a communication gap resulting from a language barrier and from a lack of real community understanding.
Society For Helping, through its mainstreaming five prong approach, assists the inner-city deaf and hard of hearing persons to become more self-actualizing and better functioning participants in society.
Society For Helping has serviced this community for 24 years and we are "continuing the legacy of making them whole".
