Mission: Shawl-anderson dance center is committed to nurturing and mentoring the growth of dancers and choreographers;
Programs: Adult programs: our adult dance program runs approximately 50 adult drop-in classes per week, 52 weeks a year, in ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, pilates, alignment, yoga, and conditioning serving people ages 18 to over 90. Classes are offered at levels for absolute beginners through professionals. Workshops are offered year-round on a pre-register basis in all movement forms described above plus specialty offerings in topics such as improvisation, composition, body music, world dance forms, partnering, and somatic practices. The program also features master classes with renowned touring artists and international guest teachers. We serve over 1,000 adults each week. Additionally, our work study program supports adults who want to take dance classes but need financial support to do so. By assisting with maintenance of our facility, mailings, events and performances, adult work study students receive one class per one hour of work in trade. This program supports over 100 adults each year and creates community and opportunity. Some of our work study students end up employed at the center as teachers or administrative staff as a result of the program.
youth programs: our youth dance program runs 72 dance classes per week, 43 weeks a year, for children and teens ages 1. 5 to 17 in ballet, modern, hip-hop, jazz, and composition. Summer programs also feature eight camps and intensives for 1 - 2 weeks each for ages 7 to 17 in the styles mentioned above. We serve over 600 youth each week of operations. Youth ensemble: the shawl-anderson youth ensemble is a pre-professional modern dance program for teens that includes creation and performance of new
center programming: in addition to our adult and youth dance programs, shawl-anderson runs the following programs: professional presentation: the dance up close/east bay series offers local audiences an intimate space to see professional level work, and supports local choreographers who want to produce their work for several weeks in a row.
