Mission: Shaw EcoVillage's mission is to train youth to become leaders and catalysts for sustainable change in Washington, DC's urban neighborhoods. Shaw EcoVillages' goals are: * to privide youth with job experiences and leadership skills; * to expose low-income and mnority youth to careers and skills (architecture & design, community planning, construction, cycling industry, environmental conservation, historic research & preservation, natural resource management) they might otherwise never know about; * to increase the sustainability of our program partners through concrete projects; * to develop a core group of future community leaders with a broad range of knowledge and skills.
Programs: Shaw EcoVillage has two programs that work with more than 200 students throughout the year. ECODESIGN CORPS provides high school students with paid internship, community service and academic fellowship opportunities. Students in the EcoDesign Corps learn how to research real-life issues within their community and design and implement solutions to these issues. CHAIN REACTION is a recycle-a-bicycle program for youth ages 9 -19. Youth learn how to repair and recycle bicycles through classes and apprenticeships. The Youth Bike Shop provides repair services so that more people can have safe, affordable, and pollution-free transportation.
